A couple of questions for anyone who makes the journey often

Whats the best route around Paris?

Should I allow extra time for driving back on a Sunday afternoon?

Thanks

We do Calais to Fontainbleau in 3.5 hours. This is the same using Peripherique or any other ways round Paris

Though, when i go with my French mate, after Paris there is a really quick direct way to Font, doing it this way takes 3 hours from Calais. Though for the life of me cant work the way out for myself :-(

For the sake of half an hour, i wouldnt worry. Traffic on Sunday night, is a little worse but not that bad... Get your self behing a dutch BMW doing 170 kph and avoid the new speed cameras that have slowed down the traffic dramatically around Paris. 3 cameras on teh way to Font now, and all get you head on, digitally

Damn right - Just change the number plates with a bit of carefully applied insulation tape, and floor it  :D

That reminds me...

Few years back my dad got the rear plate redone on his car. Got it done at Halfords, nice quick service, put it back on and bobs your uncle... Few months later, put the car through the MOT, and they told him the front plate was different to teh back    He'd been driving round with one letter different for about 8 months

Good job the old plod didnt cathc him

The trick is don't go anywhere near the peripherique - haven't got a map handy, but I'll give it a go - after you pass CdG airport you turn on to the N104 (or maybe A104...), then onto the A4 i think and then back onto the N104, if you look on a road map you'll see what I mean, you kind of go back on yourself then do a dog leg onto the A6 an your away.....
.....if that makes sense it works, and you don't end up driving round the peripherique twice as some have been known to do!

Anyone know the score on these french speed cameras then?? Always enjoyed the total absence on the way down, apart from that average time thing between toll booths, or is that bollox anyway?

Come to think of it, those red eyed, pointing right at you as you rail round a corner jobs have been springing up round here, anybody been done by one yet?

Not sure about the French ones but the best place for all UK stuff is uk speedtraps

I've always caned it in France - been between toll booths at average speeds of over 100 and never had any problems...but I've heard that when they bust you they're well strict, and they can dish out hefty on the spot fines.
I think the UK is one of the most policed road systems in Europe, and you can get away with a lot more elsewhere. I've heardly ever seen anyone pulled for speeding in mainland Europe, but you see it all the time here.

Do you mean these redeye things?

we were wankering downt nthe old motorway, doing about 120mph for the best part of an hour, I then realised that the old onki old bill were behind me,

(unmarked)

they pulled me over and demanded the best part of £90, but being british we tryed to blag it.

he then said pay up or we will take your car, (with his hand on his gun belt)

they then escorted us to the nearest cash point about 40k out of our way, took our money and left us

Sure you weren't just mugged neil!? bloody sounds like it!

So the average time thing is a myth then! arse, bet I looked like a right div having a tea brake before the booth.
Those cameras you linked to bubba look similar, although round here and essex way they're more square, if the guy in front gets done can they get you in quick succession or what, being digital high tech gismos?

The time thing isnt a myth. They can do you for it, but this is rare. This is straight from a french guy...

Actually, that link is wrong - they're just red-light gatsos which you get everywhere. It should have been this link

The site says they're not in the uk yet, but you could have seen the first ones.

"The RED EYE 77 is capable of monitoring up to three lanes of traffic. Using high speed KODAK digital traffic cameras, the system generates high resolution photographs of all offenders travelling through red lights. The system works 24 hours per day, in all lighting conditions. Two digital photographs of each offender are produced and encryption technologies are used to preserve the integrity of the data generated. High-speed ISDN telephone lines or other data communications systems instantaneously relay the offence data to a central Data Processing Unit where NIP's are automatically printed and mailed. An infrared based version of the system is also offered, whose nighttime flash is invisible to the human eye.

remember once driving back around paris and me mate rich was driving like a penis - tonking it about 100mph in a fucked astra. there was a big lcd road sign saying there was something wrong with the fast lane in about a km and that traffic should slow down (i did a spot of lightweight translation)

rich employed ignorance despite my protests and carried on (god syndrome) - turned out it was a MATTRESS across the fast lane and we swerved at the last minute - fortunately there was no one in the middle lane. he slowed down after that after threats of extreme physical violence from the rest of us in the car.

the drive round paris is pretty easy i rate and only really takes 3hrs tops from calais. ideally you want a time travel machine and then you could get there instantly. i'll get to work....

Best french road shenanigans I've seen (apart from stray mattresses and bits of exhaust) was this weird manikin dressed like a highways bloke waving a flag up and down. No kidding I thought it was a real person, and while I was thinking uhh?? we pummeled straight into a contraflow at about 80, nice.

Those red eye cameras sound like they can get a whole stream of traffic for real then, bugger, no more keeping your eyes peeled for white dashes etc
