Bouldering in western Germany
January 14, 2011, 02:45:46 pm
From next week, I'm going to be spending 2 months researching in Marburg, Hesse, and after doing a fairly extensive amount of research I've still got a few questions that would good if I could find someone to answer them! So if there's someone out there with the relevant knowledge it would be very much appreciated if you could help out!

I understand that it's possible to get to, the decent looking, crag of Riesenstein by train. I was wondering, firstly, how easy it is and, secondly, what other decent crags are reachable by train/public transport?

On the similar (but more general) note, what problems and crags can people recommend in the area? I've got the Panico http://www.panico.de/de/panico_buecher/boulderfuehrer/boulderfuehrer.php 'Eifel en Bloc' and the old Pfalz bouldering guidebook (with Riesenstein in it). Plus, I will attempt to get hold of the newer 'Odenwald Boulderfuhrer' guidebook when I'm out there (not available through Cordee in the UK).

Note: ideally I'm looking at crags/problems with a range of decent problems between 7a-7c.

Also, I don't know if anyone has any experience of meeting people out there, but if you do, do you have any advice on meeting other climbers (other than at the local wall/crags)? i.e. is getting involved with the local DAV worth it for only 2 months?

Finally, I know this is an extremely long shot, but does anyone have any experience of being a climber and living in Marburg? I've found there's a wall in Wetzlar ("The Cube"), but it seems like it'll be tricky to get to on public transport (although it's only ~40 mins drive). So any info on alternative training venues etc. near to Marburg will be appreciated!

If anyone has any general information/points/opinions about bouldering in western Germany, it would also be interesting to hear those.

Sorry for the rather long, and rambling, nature of this post. If you don't have any relevant info, but know someone who might, it would be very much appreciated if you could point them in this direction!

Cheers,
Jake

Also, does anyone have any experience of taking pads on Lufthansa flights?

The pfalz is a great spot and around now is a great time to go there for bouldering. i only been to a few spots as there are shitloads of areas. i recommend you check out Otterfelsen. Nice problems in your range. I think the guidebook gives good recommendations also.

Whoever put all that chalk on the boulder should be kicked.  :furious:

Make the must of it.

Do you have a car? If so considered driving over? As you're there for a couple of months it might work out easier?? I work with a few folks from the Netherlands and when they're over for more than a week they often just drive over on the Hull ferry... then can potter/explore on their days off much more easily...

Cheers for that, had seen photos but not a video of Lost Highway. It looks really good, although it's probably not the 'Brad Pit of Pfalz' that I've seen it refered to in some places- I guess that's more of a reference to the feature rather than the style of climbing!

'Brad Pit of Pfalz' might be stretching it a little  ;D

Still a top problem though.

Yep, I considered that. But thought it would just be easier to organise travelling out by plane (particularly as it's the first time I've been). I'm going to spending a bit more time in Marburg over the next few years (~ 6 months in total), so if it's a total ball ache not having a car, I'll take one next time.

Lots to go at on N German limestone. See the "Boulder db" on Ralf Kowalski's site: http://www.kletternimnorden.de for details.
There's a brilliant wall in Kassel, about 100 km away: http:/ www.verticalworld.de
