Getting lenses repaired
December 15, 2010, 10:43:05 am
Like an idiot, I didn't fip up my bag properly last weekend, and my zoom lens fell about 10 ft landed on back, and bent the bit which adjusts the aperture (I'm sure this has a name) and bend the rig so it won't fit on the camer andymore and I expect knackered the electrical connections too. It zooms and focuses OK still with no grinding or anything. Is it worth seeing if it's repairable? It's about 10 years old, and I think the equivalent lens costs in the £160 - £200 mark.

Or is this a good time to get an upgrade? :0)

So he did. Probably worth sending to Sigma to at least get an estimate.

Thanks.

I'd PM Tris about it - I think he sent them a picture - they gave him a quote - but that had to be re-adjusted as the damage was different whence opened etc...

In my experience and opinion, it's not worth getting it repaired, and yes, it's definately time for an upgrade.

For a ten-year old Sigma zoom I'd guess it will be 'uneconomical'. Worth checking household insurance coverage?

Given you've got nowt to lose it might be worth trying to have a go at fixing it yourself, see if you can find a similar sigma with knackered glass but good body on ebay etc.

Failing that, sell yours on ebay for parts. CASHBACK.

Not sure it will be covered, but think we have BMC cover.

Dug lens out to have another look; there's a nick in the glass just off centre of the rear element, and I can see that the second element in from the front is out of aligmnet quite badly. I'm pretty sure its BER.

Anyone recommend something similar I can get paws on before VAT increase? Possibly a bit longer, 100-400 or so?
