The Mac Help Thread
June 08, 2010, 02:45:08 pm
Thought it might be useful on the back of what's mentioned below to have a Mac help thread.

I can offer this after rooting around for hours trying to work out why any net connection of any sort of my MacBook Pro was terminally slow. The forum guys DNS addition made the instant difference.

 :o Macs go wrong?!?!?!

And here's me under the impression that they "Just workTM:P

Best solution is to set your router to use OpenDNS and then whenever your at home anyone using your network should get their DNS from there too (unless they've specifically configured their laptop to use another DNS server).

Quite how Mac didn't see that they were setting themself up for trouble is beyond me by stating that everything's so 'simple' and 'easy'. Scouse women are simple and easy but it doesn't mean I admire those attributes.

As for Mac shop employees, well I should probably head over to the Room 101 thread.

I've been thinking lately whether there might be an OS application that would allow me to use the camera on my macbook pro as a light meter? I know very little of the technology behind their camera but if anyone does know of anything, I'd be glad to hear of it.

That needs its own website.

You must have some idea of where to look for application beast?

My powerbook finally gave up the ghost, so I need a new laptop.. would like one of the newer (i5) macbooks but am unsure what kind of drive to go for and wouldn't mind some advice? 5400 rpm seems a bit backward, so I could opt for the 7200 upgrade or maybe even choose an SSD drive - less GB but faster? Any thoughts..?

Assuming you haven't already done so I would be maxing out the memory as my first priority as that will probably be more of a bottle neck than the speed of the HDD.

True, though to max it out would mean adding another 4gigs of ram! kinda expensive at the mo and I'm skint - depsite being in the market for a new macbook! Would prolly add more ram later I think, though I guess the same is true of any mods to the HD too.. the one thing I cant do at a later date is to get an anti glare screen as far as I'm aware.. so irritating not issuing these as standard, the glass ones seem like they'll be piss poor for optimising graphics for the web, print and virtually usesless on trains, in airports etc..
