I've been told that James have lost one of their very big brands due to this, the brand has decided it would prefer to be in the Edinburgh shop than JE James. Shame.....

Sounds good - but from experience of bike shops in Sheffield and where I started riding near London, the smaller independent retailers give a much higher standard of servicing as seems to be expected by the majority of riders on here. Hence the reputation of places like La bicicletta, 18 bikes, Stanley Fearne, Racescene etc.

These larger shops just employ any old mechanic who knows less than I do on how to maintain a bike.

However it must a good thing to see another place opening up - and give James a good kick in the teeth. I know 18 bikes wanted to carry Orange until James's heard about it  and prevented it happening.

I think Edinburgh Bike Co-op tend to have a pretty good rep for service from what I've heard. Obviously I'm all about 18bikes, but EBC won't need to try too hard to compete with you know who in the City...

I hereby declare Norton's bike shop (shed) open.  Payment in  :alky: in the Rising Sun acceptable.  Happy customers so far include Joe ( :alky:) P,  :-\ Dolly and   :pissed: FatDoc (sort of).   UKB discounts apply, minimum order value 2 x  :beer1:.  Shop has its own test track (long version includes Devils Elbow so might have to be amended soon)

Works in IE8, not Chrome. Not sure about FF. Weird.

Anybody else had a look yet?  Can't say I was massively impressed.  No jaw-dropping offers to tempt me to release the moths from my wallet, no bike pron for me to drool over, some over-priced components and masses of their own-brand 'Revolution' bikes.  My guess, they're aiming to concentrate on those new to biking.......

Think I'll be sticking to my regular credit card bashing shops - that I know and trust.

Although I'm currently banned from purchases due to needing things like a new boiler for the house and the wife getting ever larger.

I'll be checking them out when my bike needs a service as Langsett were pretty pants last week.

Check out La Bicletta for servicing - I had my work bike serviced there. It cost £120ish - which included new rear derailleur and cassette. General tightening & full servicing of everything else - new bar tape & something else. My bike always ride really well after Alex has had his hands on it.
