NYC hotels
March 17, 2014, 09:46:27 pm
I've got to spend a weekend in NYC next month and am having trouble finding the right sort of hotel. Anyone got any favourite recommendations? Not too boring corporate but not so achingly hip I can't afford it. Lower Manhattan would be ideal.

We stayed in The Marrakech at Christmas although it's Upper West Side and I can't comment on price since it was a 30th gift from my girlfriend. Had a thoroughly brilliant time and I slept like a log there. I could put the feelers out to my friends who live there if you'd like Andy (native NYC'er and co well versed in Manhattan life)?

+1 all my visits have involved claustrophobic irish-themed places where someone has their hand out for a tip every time you breathe.

+2

My best ever stay was via an apartment share/sublet agency, but that was for a week and not really viable for a night or two.

Thanks all; much as I suspected. I realize moaning about this looks like a very middle class sort of problem to have. If you could ask your friends Tom that would be great.

Hey Andy, I live in NYC. I'll message you my email and fill you in on some good spots.  In all honesty I now tell people to stay in airbnb's, they are huge over here and often better than hotels. My folks usually stay in them now when they come to visit.

Upper West Side

Does that need a ladder to get to?

Andy, feedback from my man was also Air BNB. Seems to be a few bigups for this.

Shark will have one if needed ; )

UWS, careful that's nosebleed territory...

If you want proper NYC it's also worth staying in a few of the great spots in Brooklyn, I live just over the bridge.  Most of the great bars and restaurants are here now and it helps keeps the price down a bit.  Also despite what everyone thinks it's ridiculously close to Manhattan - takes me 15 mins to get to work in Midtown.

Word. I had pm'd Andy about you being in NYC and was going to drop you an email so that's saved me a job.

Yeah thanks guys I've been out of the climbing game with a really bad elbow injury, hoping to get back in to it soon.

Paul B hit me on Twitter and got me involved in this thread, it is my adopted home city now after all...
