Recommend me a camera
September 22, 2010, 04:26:51 pm
Can anyone recommend me a camera that I will be able to get some good climbing and landscape/wildlife photos on? I have a decent compact but I am after something a bit more high spec with a quick shutter speed so that I dont miss shots like I am now. I dont want anything top-end but I am willing to spend upto about £300 for something reasonable.
Cheers for any advice

Lots of recommendations here (plus lots of geekery over new gadgets/features).

Thoughts and advice on Nikon SLRs

Thoughts on SLR v's compact

More camera recommendations

You can get some good second hand deals, so worth considering things on flea-buyers.

But just get a Nikon D3s bit more than your budget, but you won't ever need to buy another camera again, and it will take the pictures for you.

I'm after a nikon d60 body only, seem to be going for about £200 on fleabay, you can get it with the kit lens for about £250-£300

It'd be interesting to know what you use currently?

Its a fujifilm finepix compact of some sort. 10megapix and a few fancy features but it doesnt have adjustable focus, it has a really slow shutter speed and doesnt have inter-changeable lenses. Just want something I can start to get some good shot with.

I'd save/splash the extra and get an entry level DSLR... I'm still amazed at simply how much better the pictures are than any £150-200 compact I've used... It just works really really well

Like Jim said, its then a Cannonette or Nikonista choice! (I've an entryish level Nikon and my father has the entry level Cannon. Both are top IMHO).

it has a really slow shutter speed

I think you're on about shutter lag (i.e. the gap between when you pull the trigger to when it actually fires) not shutter speed. Any DSLR will have effectively zero shutter lag. A lot of better end non_SLRs will have very little discernable shutter lag these days too.

I liked the Nikon (but went for the more ££ D5000 (I think the 3000 would have been fine in retrospect) - My Dads 1000d (sister in law has one too) is great too...
the new Nikon D3100 is coming out soon (I assume its the replacement for the D3000) - which means either 1. you save upa nd wait and get it (it'll be c.£500) or 2. The D3000 will be heavily discounted soon as the new model is coming...

There's already an offer on it isn't there, buy it and a lense and they give you £200 quid back.

I had a 1000d and thought it was great. I'd suggest going and having a fondle. To throw a spanner in the works, the entry level Sonys get fairly good write ups, shame about the queer hot shoe but the idea of putting IS/VR into the body isn't such a bad one for the wallet!

Yup - I was torn between the Cannon and the Nikon... in the end it was the yellow on the strap that sold me  ;D
