Wharncliffe - how to get there ?
March 15, 2010, 09:59:37 pm
I can probably snatch an hour on the way back to Sheffield from Barnsley tomorrow.
I don't think I've been there since 1992 and I don't quite get the approach directions in guides.
Apparently the best bouldering is at the Dragon's Den/Lodge buttress areas so if anyone can provide an idiot's (me) guide on where to park it would be most appreciated. Looks like its on the Manchester Road A6102 but can't quite make it out

The parking is either in the turn off for Chase Lodge or in a layby just North of this. The road you are approaching on is Woodhead Road which runs North out of Grenoside.

OK cheers.
Do you just walk over the top of the moor until you get to the crag then ?

Yeah, it's about 10 minute walk in.

Head for the lodge itself and Dragon's Den is very close. You can also pass the other mini-crag (forget the name) which has problems on it.

I'm sure this query has come up at least once before so you'll probably find extra beta and maybe a map using the search.

Was up there over Xmas and chatted with the farmer.  I'd driven up the track off Woodhead Rd and parked near the lodge/gate.  He asked very nicely if I'd mind parking in the lay-by at the bottom of the lane (just off Woodhead Rd)  to leave room for his tractor/trailor.

Follow the track from the lodge until you can see the next farmhouse(lodge).  Crag is down and right from the farm.  Incidentally the farmer mentioned that his shiny new trailer was his fourth that year as the previous three had all been stolen from outside his farmhouse  So if he 'enquires about your well being' you know why.

The area is horrendous for break-ins - I never park in the top car park (very close to this) when biking at Wharncliffe any more.

Thanks for all the info.
Managed to get there in the end after parking in the wrong place twice and getting lost in the woods once.
I ended up driving through the Chase as 2 old fellers from the clay badger shooting club said it was OK. I realised on the way back that you're not meant to do that
If anyone else is as confused as I was then the white Wortley shooting club sign is a useful marker showing where to turn off Woodhead Road
