There's a seal that says warranty void if broken. Basically I'd assume if I have broken their precious little sticker they'll start blaming me.

Anyway, its going back. With the people posting the consumer advice shiz, at this point is a refund out of the question as I'm certain they'll fix it with similar components which obviously aren't wonderful?

It won't boot from a live CD (I get error after error) and Memtest just hangs. Its also cut out again during a trial boot into Ubuntu. Pretty sure that confirms it as turd hardware.

Hello guys....!
With an increase in services and applications available for use over the internet, increase in the power and efficiency of mobile computing chips, etc. Is the desktop dying? Perhaps the focus of our efforts to conquer 'the desktop' would be better served playing on a fair playing field... mobile devices.
With all the noise about GMAE, and the Ubuntu Mobile effort, it seems that the world is cutting off the wires and going mobile... what do you guys think?

Greetings dudes!

With all those boring IBM Grey and Dell Black boxes around I think that its high time we started changing the colour of our desktops. What type of colourant do you recommenced?

I can't wait to start dyeing my desktop like those Grateful Dead t-shirts.

Rad!

by the way, check out www.rewipe for all your reconditioned toilet paper needs

How about this Lagers...

Plenty of fancy LED lights from most online retailers.

Or for the discerning Star Wars fan

If you're a gastronome then perhaps...

Or if you just don't give a shit....

One of the students in my office got sick of using his laptop hooked up to a monitor so instead had cobbled together a desktop PC sans case. The PAT tester wasn't very happy to find it.

Righteo

well the official diagnosis from ebuyer is backed; its fucked. They can't repair it and haven't got any in stock. Unfortunately it seemed rather a good deal at the time (£345) and now I have a credit note for that value at ebuyer.

Has anyone any ebuyer desktop rec's that equal (or exceed) the spec on this:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/167442

Thanks.

Some potential options in the Ex-display/openbox section if you're willing to risk it.

ok you trades of good sales descriptions people I'd really love to hear from you regarding this:

Basically, the motherboard is shot. They can't replace it for whatever reason so the options offered are a credit note, for the original purchase price (345) which seems a bit useless as they don't seem to have anything directly comparabale. Because of this I got in contact with them to request a refund, in this instance they've offered me 295 quid stating that I've had 10 months use out of it, the design life is 6 years so you divide the cost by 72 months and work out the depreciation and thats your lot. Supposedly this is in line with all distance selling / sales of goods regulations a refund isn't the same as a warranty?

To me this seems fairly shit. (I did try to point out that the price of the PC has gone up so they actually need to pay me after the 10th time she repeated company policy; not too helpful but the stunned silence did make me smile)

Not 100% sure, but i think they're within their rights to offer you credit to the original value if they can't repair. You could always check this with a quick call to consumerdirect.

Balls to the depreciation.  What they sold you was defective at the time of purchase: they sold you a substandard quality memory controller (I'm guessing) which didn't last the distance.  they can't charge you for the depreciation.

They also can't make you accept a credit note:

http://webarchive.nationalarchives.gov.uk/+/http://www.berr.gov.uk/whatwedo/consumers/fact-sheets/page38311.html#Q9MustIacceptacreditnoteinsteadofarefund

How did you pay for it?  I think you'll probably want to go hardball on them.

I don't want to say this, but I guess I should: you get what you pay for... just like a car.  Get your squids back, then buy a decent machine...

Q12. Neither repair nor replacement of the goods are possible. What can I do?

You may either pursue the old route of damages or a partial or full refund. Probably either would give you exactly the same amount of money. You would seek a full refund in scenarios such as those where you had enjoyed absolutely no benefit from the goods. If you had benefited from them then you would seek a partial refund as a fair remedy. This is exactly the reasoning that would be employed if you sought damages.

Thats where they're coming from but reading the first paragraph it is an "inherent fault". I.e. the motherboard is crap.
