Knee guards
June 12, 2008, 03:44:51 pm
Does anybody know where I can find one of those knee protectors that Graham is always sporting for knee bars or something similar?  They look like a good way of saving skin and pain!

i think they are made out of a thigh support (the type with velcro straps) with rubber stuck/sewn on. (or so an american i met said). he seemed to think that a flat sheet of the rubber was easy to come by

Use an old car innertube.

Good enough for Big G, good enough for you.

I've heard of people cutting off part of the leg of a wetsuit to use for this. Sticky rubber stuck to the top is best, but extra neoprene works too I think (haven't tried this myself). Dean Potter uses a home-made one here http://www.aerialistmovie.com/king/index.html on a savage highball in Yosemite.

Caving kneepad would work fine.

I use a old neoprene elbow support that has stretched somewhat. When I wear it I put it on under my trousers
It works really well

I was browsing an old US Climbing Mag on the weekend that had a "how to" for making a knee guard in the Tech Tips section. PM me if you want a scan of the article sent to you.

I have one pre-made one I bought in Rodellar, which is basically a neoprene tube with a hole behind the knee. This is good for some kneebars, but does slip when on long sweaty routes. I also have a couple of home made ones (roll-mat, gaffer tape and shoes laces) these can be tied on tighter and have tougher protection for sharp, uncomfortable bars, but they aren't very comfy on long routes.

go to any bmx/skating retailer and you will find loads of soft kneepads that would be perfect. it never occurred to me to wear mine climbing!

There is a place in Colorado that if you send them a thigh support, they will coat it with a thinish layer of climbing shoe rubber. About $20 i think. Can't for the life of me remember the name of place though.  ::)

rock n resole in boulder, co sells them.  they dont list them on their website,  but if you give'em a ring they will send you one out.   they come in med and large.   the larges are quite big so if you have toothpick legs like me go for the medium.

Most of the Americans use this rubber re-soler in the Colorado area. (The name escapes me at the minute) You send them a knee pad and for $18 they will coat a large % of the top with climbing shoe rubber. Thin enough to give some kind of feeling of the placement, but thick enough to protect.

It's gone down $2 since you said pretty much the same thing in July last year. Must be the credit crunch.

Apparently glueing an EB to your leg works well, and when used in conjuction with Mad Rock 'Finger Slippers'...  Fuck me, your just gonna be unstoppable.

I am a strong believer in additional rubber wear, and as I am sure you will all agree, there is definitly a time and a place.  Magpie? :)
