Good fat sport climbing quickdraws
December 14, 2007, 12:05:38 pm
Anyone know where you can get good fat (i.e. wide slings) sport draws.  Like the petzl ones, but preferably not really overpriced.  All the ones on the usual websites seem to be the skinny lightweight ones.

Cheers

planetfear shop

Edit: you might want to ring Cragx and see what they've got as I remember them having in fat draws for Rob Napier at one stage.

I'm probably just being a bit dumb but can someone explain to me the advantage of phat slings on QDs for sport?  Extra room to sew on your sponsor's logos?

Esaier to clip as the krab doesn't twist/move as much?

they're just easier to frig about with when your pulling up to try moves etc. New thin dyneema slings hurt.

Oh right yeah of course, ta.  This reminds me of an idea I had for a joke bit of kit:  The ergonomic sport quick drawer.  You just take the grip part of an ice axe (or old joy stick) that's nicely shaped to your fist and slide it over the sling.  Wouldn't that be something?

Karin Magog had this old draw which had something like wood taped inside the sling to keep it rigid then a system of pipe and string so that she could open the gate, clip an out of reach bolt, and close the gate  (for something at Kilnsey). Fairly amusing to look at. Low and behold a couple of year some guy turned up at ceuse selling something that did the same thing (it was a hell of a lot better but still daft).

Abrasion resistance of course. Sort of important for red pointing: when a thin sling is grinding at the same point of sharp rock for many burns it gets trashed. ( Also, fatter slings are easier to grab for those who are in to that sort of thing. )

Does anyne know if the krabs the Petzl ones come with are any good in a stick clip as I tend to find wire gates better (Betaclimb's stick clip that is)

Sorry never tried mine in a betastick, they're fine in my bulldog clip setup though.

I may do, but my knowledge of clipstick-krab compatability is non-existent. Have you not had your spirits in a clipstick yet?

fat petzl tapes work fine in beta stick, i'd recommend BD positron keylock biners and hot wires or petzl spirits if you are feeling flush! cragx sell petzl tapes btw...

I'm looking at buying my first set of quickdraws, im not too interested in Trad at the moment, so would some nice big fat quickdraws be the most beneficial. I have been looking at the DMM aeros. Also what would be a good number to start off with, i was thinking 10?

number of draws depends very much on where you are intending to climb.

Some real routes only need three or four, but you wouldn't want to in to Malham with just those!

I have 14 of the petzl draws in varying lengths (10 small, 2 medium and 2 long) which have been fine for routes in europe up to 40m.

I got about 10 as full draws and the others i just bought the strings and added my own crabs.  You can get them from:

http://www.cave-crag.co.uk/739/Petzl-Quickdraw-Slings.html?referrer=froogle&utm_source=google&utm_medium=froogle&utm_campaign=pid739

from £2.50 for the shorties.  Advantages i can see are they don't flap around like thinner draws, important in a strong wind and reduces the chance of back clipping.....and they're much nicer to grab when working routes if that is your thing.  I think DMM might also do some fat draws.  My petzl ones work fine in my beta clip stick too.

I made some petzl draws up a while ago and have been very pleased with them, worked out cheaper than buying complete:

Quote
I went for the Petzls but made them up using the DMM pro clips which are currently going cheap over at Rock n'run. In case anyone else is interested in doing the same:

Straight gates:

Bent gates:

Petzl slings:
http://www.rockrun.com/products-Spirit-Express-11cm-Quickdraw_CL-QD-SP11.htm

That's a saving of £52.50 for 10 (they retail whole at £16 ea), get in   .
