Dupuytren's contracture
October 18, 2007, 12:27:34 pm
Has anyone had this?, been wrongly diognosed with it?

Whats the score?

I have a lump, i have had it for about 1 year now, but just the other day after a session the tendon around flamed right up and i havnt been able to straighten my little finger for 4 days, i went to the doctor just now and she says Dupuytren's contracture.

Now then, my physio the other night, just said its inflamed sheaf problems as i can still pull very hard on all fingers, and there is no pain when  he did all the tests on the fingers. he recommends a couple of months off, lots of ice and ibuprofen.

I did have about 7 weeks off with another injury nothing to do with the hand, but the lump is still there.

So my question, who do i believe?

answers on a postcard please.

right so after reading all that, and all the info i found on the net

basically no one has any idea what is best, considering it affects thousands of people.

The problem I see as us being climbers its harder to find what is the best cure to still be able to climb ard.

I read about some dude in paris is meant to be on of the best doctors of sorting this out.

The NHS have some info here.

I get the general impression* that onset is extremely slow, so this may be why your getting different diagnoses.  In all likelihood I guess you'll have to treat the symptoms such as pain as they arise as you would with other finger injuries and wait to see how things progress, if they do.

* I used to work with a plastic surgeon who operated on severe cases of dupuytren's and was interested in investigating the genetic aetiology of the disease who explained the symptoms and disease progression to me.

as afore mentioned in a previous thread i saw a hand specialist (on bupa) who wasn't said he wouldnt (or wouldnt be able to justify ) operate and do the needle puncture thing until i couldn't put the hand flat on a table.

Cheers
Tim

As you may have read on the other post, I have one too, on my right hand in line with the tendon of my smallest finger. It hasn't changed in the last 6 months, only time I feel it at all is if I am pulling hard on holds big enough to touch it (luckily I am hardcore and only use tiny holds so this is a rarity ;-)).

I'm not going to do anything about it unless it gets any worse.

As I've said before, I wouldn't comment directly without seeing the finger/ palm.

Dupuytren's does not affect tendons, it's the palmar fascia.  Either your physio or your GP may be wrong, but I would expect it's more likely your GP has less experience in hands.  Unless it's his/her specialist interest.
