World class bouldering on peak grit.
October 09, 2008, 07:54:00 pm
Now I'm not talking about grade just quality and to be honest I can think of very few world class problems on peak grit, so in short order here we go, please feel free to (do what ever you like its a free country).

carless torque
NTBTA
crescent arete
West Side Story
Sphinx (nu skool highball)
Screaming dream (ditto)

Please feel free to add more but let's be honest the Ace, Joker, 8 Ball etc are shyte.

I'd disagree with what's been said so far about The Ace, Sean's Arete and Blind Fig. One of which looks world class, and the other two, while great problems, finish halfway up crags etc.

Spare Rib etc?

Yeah Spare Rib looks amazing. What about Neverending Story? That finishes halfway up a crag and looks pretty good to me? To me it doesn't make much difference where the end point of a problem is TBH.

But yet, you have NTBTA on your list. You've been duped. Style over substance.

The ace is amazing when thinking about the type of movement and how truly hard such a few moves can be! Its also the only way up that boulder which is pretty cool!

Voyager
Superbloc
Suavito

I think that something should finish at the top of a boulder/crag to be world class, dropping off half way up a wall is not so inspiring!

How can eliminates be world class eg Strawberries and Blind Fig (don't use the edge come on)?

No doubt I'll get puntered for this but there ain't much world class on Peak grit. It's easy to tell this because there ain't climbers from all over the world (or continent) travelling to do 'em.

Now I'm not saying Peak grit isn't good (although I think Yorkshire is better), I've had loads of good days out on it. However, if I could hypothetically climb any ten or twenty problems in the world none would be on Peak grit.

That top 50 climber list offered the following...

The Ace   v13
Inertia reel traverse   v12
Careless torque   v11
Scoop de grace   v9
West side story   v8+
Brutal arete   v8
Tierdrop   v7
Not to be taken away   v4
Wests route   v2

I'm not sure I agree with all of them but it's a good start.
We all know Yorkshire beats the Peak for world class grit problems anyhow.

Personally I rather revere Brads arete - The first time I saw that bloc I thought I was deep in the forest - praise indeed!

I was thinking about this the other day - which single problem typifies peak grit in the way that Midnight Lightning says Yosemite? Maybe not a quality thing but a massive statement.

I'd vote for The Storm, West Side, Careless, The Ace and Voyager. Crescent as the finest line though. Not that I can do them mind.

And by the way, can someone sort out an 8C for Tyler to come and do on the grit?

Happy listing!

I consider the peak's true quality is found off the beaten track. Gardom's circuit, eagle tor/rowtor and to a lesser extent burbage south edge spring to mind, a whole bunch of class that visitor's won't encounter without local knowledge.

All visiting boulders (mostly german) that I've climbed with have generally only had cresent arete, NTBTA and deliverance in mind.

great problem, great location, don't care if it traverses off half way

same goes for Satin

I guess the fact that both can be highballed out also adds something....
