Title: Where to go tomorrow (scotland)
Post by: SamD on February 15, 2008, 03:45:43 pm
So, being based in St Andrews, bouldering here sucks, anyone got any good ideas for a decent days bouldering anywhere near there?

And the inevitable answer from me is

Hopefully will be dry, chase the sunny side of the boulders. Take some brushes if you want to try anything new.

I would be there working a couple of new lines if i was in any fit state. Probably surfing instead.

Glen Clova is quite far for us to go.... is it definitely worth it? As an alternative, is Wolfcrag any good?

<grumbles and mutters about how rubbish Fife is>

Wolfcrag is OK, I wouldn't rave about it though.  Plenty to do though:

There's always Dumbarton.  I'd second SA Chris and his Clova suggestion.
Even the Aberdeen coastal spots would be worth a look.

Don't think I'm good enough for Dumbarton. Think I'll check the weather and thus let the Gods decide.

Balls.  Dumby has lots at the lower grades, it ain't all hardcore.  An acquired taste, yeah, but not all hard.

Does anyone know what happened to Dave Mcleod's online topo for Dumbarton? It seems to have disappeared.

It disappeared. You don't really need it though, just turn up. Someone there is bound to have one.

I think Wolfcrag is OK, if you don't mind chipped quarries.

loads more topos here

If your really desperate for one you might want to check out the Way Back Machine (http://www.archive.org/).

In particular one of these might have it... http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.davemacleod.com/ (http://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.davemacleod.com/)

The topo was on scotlandonline, but is now gone. If you are here for any duration, worth getting SMC Lowland Outcrops or holding out for the new Stone Country Bouldering Guide, out next month.

FWIW I went to Boltsheugh at Newtonhill on Saturday afternoon for first climbing this year. Conditions were perfect all weekend.

I have to disagree, I really struggle at Dumby, I'm not the strongest boulderer generally but Dumby makes me look even worse than I am  ;D  There are some easier problems but the majority are fairly hardcore in my (weak and girly) opinion.
