Title: Foreign invasion to Peak grit imminent
Post by: Percy B on November 05, 2007, 06:34:09 pm
As mentioned here http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,8192.0.html Jacky Godoffe will be over working at The Works the back end of next week setting problems, but also sampling some grit if the weather is good - as will Dani Andrada who is also over next week. All we need now is the rumoured Sharma visit to happen and it'll be a full house of heroes!

Just got an email from Ludovic Laurence (the french beast who won the FIBO in 1997) - apparently he's coming over with some buddies to compete in the first round on the CW bouldering league too. In his email he says (and I quote), "I will show you engleesh guys how to climb!"
And he probably will too - he can do a bit....

Mocking his own accent? How atypically French.

Is this news or just a list of people on percy's email contacts list. Shitheap anyone?

P.S. if this french guy is anything like all the french boulderers i've just had to tollerate in albarracin then showing us how to climb will be involve a lot of screaming/shouting/whooping/poffing at every opportunity and not a lot of sending. :wank:

They bring pof abroad with them? Blimey. I thought pof was being used less, not more.

Surely it would be more useful/interesting to report the presumable deluge of sends when they actually get here, rather than just nailing up a shameless plug for the Climbing Works and hoping hero spotters pile in to ply their trade?

By the way Gaskins lives near Rock + Run everyone pile down with your cheque books and you might catch a glimpse (please don't).

Sorry - that was me mocking his french accent....

The comment, "Shitheap, anyone?" sounds like an invitation to join you on one, Dave. I for one may pass on that. (Shameless plugging I'll admit though!)

I often forget that expressing excitement at some foreign interest (or any interest) in British bouldering competitions is a no-no on UKB. What was I thinking.....

What a deluge of negativity....
I won't be having my precious resource being trampled on by the mauraruding hoards, not being a local, but I would have thought it was a bit interesting to know a load of international wads are about to decend on this oft neglected backwater of international climbing? Or am I totally wrong and an idiot?

Exactly my point. Some people are interested in this, some people are not. If you're not, why make negative comments? Not helpful, yet typical of so many climbing forums. Lets not lower ourselves to the back-biting level of other forums and try and stay upbeat shall we? :)

Not wanting to be an arselicker (i.e. the price isn't right) but I am intersted in what one of the legends of the forest would manage to do on grit.

I might even volunteer myself as a celebrity spotter.  (there's one! wow a class 4 locomotive pulling some old GNER rolling stock, wait till I tell the boys on platform three about this trails off into trainspotting metaphor etc

Well I don't think this is the bleeding edge of news but not really shitheap material. I mean these people are actually coming to climb. It's not like Percy started a thread about people who have decided not to come. that would just be silly, like writing about a route you've decided not to do or something....
Ludovic was a beast in '97. Be interesting to see what all these uber wads make of the complete lack of peak based grit 8a's.....

P.S. Take them to Rivelin Quarries, they'll love it.

strong foreign climbers come to the peak all the time (likewise strong british climbers go abroad all the time), but most don't have a local aquaintance to advertise it in advance, and its not news unless they do something. and plus it can just rain. its certainly not news just because percy's on speaking terms with a few of them.

I'm sure JB will be intrested in this news, just so he can make sure he's got everything wired again this year and give them all the tour whilst flashing everything to demonstrate.

You know me too well Dave, however I did this to Sharma & Ludovic last time they were at the plantation, which was far more fun as none of the british 'guides' knew who I was either... be psyched to show Dave around mind.

Dani opened his account today, not too shabby though it was a bit warm in the sun. He definitely improved as the day went on, should be tearing the place apart later in the week.

Dani will have a very distorted view of the Peak. The sun was out, the rock was dry, friction was ok, the Plantation was almost deserted and Dave Simmonite was actually climbing.

Thats way more news worthy than Andrada doing Deliverance!

Not that Daves climbing is in any way impressive!

Dani's already been to the Tor, and very pleased he was too. Not sure what he got up to (i was too embroiled in my own saga), but I can tell you Weedkiller traverse took him four goes....

...the tor strikes again

I assume that was an attempt footless

Once upon a time when everyone else did routes I was on my own doing laps on Powerband as training for...........er...........doing laps on Powerband more smoothly when a diminutive Frenchman with goggly eyes came wandering down. Between attempts on Mecca he'd decided to see what delights lay at the right hand end of the crag so I pointed out the various routes and problems before directing him to the hallowed traverse itself.

He struggled desperately with the start and took about five goes to get the cross through move before failing miserably to do any of the middle section despite numerous attemps and every foot sequence I could suggest. I hadn't the heart to tell him that the difficult bit was at the end as he seemed such a nice chap and he gave up and went back up to Mecca with a cheery gallic shrug.

Think Jibe had more joy with the routes but it was another example of how The Tor works in mysterious ways.

Nope. It seems Dani has very fat fingers and they wouldn't fit properly up my sphincter in the slots on the traverse.

Didn't Dani do Ben's roof second go though?

I too struggle on Powerband, I've never got as far as pulling on it looks so shit.

Dani did Ben's roof second go, yes. And walked up a number of the 7cs. He would have flashed ben's roof if he'd listened to reason.

Not ours I hasten to add, we certainly brushed more off then we applied. Problem is, although the problem gets wet readily its well sheltered from the wind and the rain, and its dead popular. We were there on a monday, so it'd had the full weekends attention n'all.
A couple of weeks ago I met some guys trying to dry it out on a damp day, it was covered in chalk obviously. If they'd read FOR they'd know the only thing this creates is a paste useful for curing stomach upsets.

Here's some more pics to cheer you up:
He didn't do either I hasten to add, mainly due to fact that his skin finally went through about a second after the first pic.

I know Samson os technically harder but was he seriously trying to solo Messaiah, It's already been responsible for one broken back and the hard move at the top is difficult to read and easy to fall off (usually completely without control  :'()
