Title: Knoppix
Post by: Obi-Wan is lost... on March 30, 2005, 12:49:09 pm
Currently surfing UKB using a Knoppix CD. If you've ever wondered what all the fuss is about Linux, but were too afraid to install it fo'real, get yer self one of these.

Go to www.knoppix.org and download the latest ISO of Knoppix (700mb, so use broadband or work connection), (currently 3.6, but 3.8.1 should be out any day now) Burn the image to a CD using something like Nero or Alcohol (it's got to let you burn from an ISO) Bung the CD in your PC, restart you machine and as long as its set to boot from CD, hey presto you have a Linux machine. Have an explore, look about, and when you've had enough take out the CD, reboot the machine and your back in Windows cos it doesn't touch your harddrive, it runs the lot from RAM. Clever. Oh yeah and on one CD they squeeze nearly 2gig of software including full Star Office suite, photoshop clone 'The GIMP', loads of random games...whoever said Windows Software was bloated and badly coded?

That's a pretty cool idea but why not just use your PC? ;)

I like to run Linux under VMWare - that way the PC and the Linux environments can communicate with each other happily.
