Title: Bouldering Top Trumps
Post by: Dave Flanagan on December 01, 2004, 11:18:41 am
Made these up ages ago. Could be good for passing the time between showers. Could also be considered sad. Could cause a lot of arguments.

Any suggested improvements? New catergories etc.

nice work - not sure about the steep thing though - i mean can we really class karma as 10deg overhanging? its a slab at the top, and fucking steep at the bottom. maybe "shape" would be a better category.

ROFLMAO, quality!!

And people accuse me of being a nerd, lol.

I like em - one thing though, I think you need to add sustainedness in there, it's the only major factor not covered that actually differentiates a few quite clearly (e.g. Dreamtime).

Look cool mate!

How about a famous climber version to include:

Star rating
Madness
Boldness (could be the same thing as above)
Strength
Injury
New routing
Good Looking?

I can see Dave Thomas scoring a high card here

Maybe a stamina catergory is better than a steppness one?

yeah maybe - if theres a photo on then its clear what shape/angle it is generally.

Dreamtime 7/10 for power 1 up from Midnight Lightning, how does that work?
Title: Bouldering Top Trumps
Post by: Dave Flanagan on December 01, 2004, 11:48:59 am
Its just something I did quickly when I was bored and the numbers out of ten are relative to the grade.

Fair do. Very good by the way. Any more in the set?

Yeah I working on a full set of about 40 from the whole world. Its just a way of not doing real work.

How about Wheel of Life for Oz (winning score on stamina).

Weird I was just about to add that, does anyone know the name of the 8c slab in Japan?

How about a 'waddage' catagory. In as much as the thimble would have the highest waddage score. This sums up the sort of x factor that some problems have.

Post by: Dave Flanagan on December 01, 2004, 12:37:27 pm
Would danger not cover that?
Title: Bouldering Top Trumps
Post by: dave on December 01, 2004, 12:44:17 pm
i suppose "waddage" might also translate to "pub bragging rights".

Surely Green trav should be swapped out in favour of Brad Pit if significance quality and fame are the main criteria.

I know someone who produced a set of piss take top trump cards for faces in the N Wales climbing scene.

I haven't seen them yet, but apparently I scored very high for ranting - can't think what they mean?

how about a bullshit factor?

i would also say dreamtime n mandala are quite technical. not to be confused with the fu manchu ratings compared to dracula with the horror top trumps

Nice work! I don't know if you have decided to drop the steepness bit but there's a typo in the word 'degrees'

It would make an awesome wall chart too. :)

Shurely Careless Torque should be cranked up to 10 for all categories?
How does the Rails (V2?) have the same power rating as CT?
Plural of 'foot' is 'feet'.......
Title: Bouldering Top Trumps
Post by: dave on December 22, 2004, 02:40:22 pm
why would CT be 10 for stamina?

Each of the ratings is of course relative to the grade. Otherwise the bigger grades would win all the time.

Really? I always thought that was the beauty of top trumps - even though you had a weedy little minesweeper that was about 1/100th the weight of the USS Nimitz, you could always win on something cheeky, like, first year of service, or no. of mortar launchers......

Same thing here - although some weedy 5+ won't beat a 7b+, you can always out-gun it on 'year first climbed*' or 'boldness'.

*I'm assuming that an older problem will beat a more recent one??

seriously though, i would have thought the high stamina scores would be reserved for long problems like say staminaband, easyrider-into-chipshopbrawl, anaesthesia, barrel traverse etc.

Yep, fair point - it could do with a good honest traverse.

And a decent hard problem that requires very little technique at all - i.e. power 10, technique 1.  Any suggestions?

buckstone dyno?

it's only a big jump twixt two big holds innit?
Title: Bouldering Top Trumps
Post by: dave on December 22, 2004, 03:49:25 pm
theres a fair bit of tech in buckstone. georges wall dyno going str8 to the break is more like just pulling fucking hard and fast, minimal technique. must be some more.

I would disagree entirely with the 'no technique' thing - there 's more than just pulling when it comes to moves like that - timing, precision, power, contact etc - new thread to discuss?  I think so!

About 6? years ago Miles and everyones favourite climbing celebrity BH made a set of climber top trumps. They used mags and The Power etc for reference plus there own experience of witnessing wads. It was pretty fun.

Problems or routes is a better idea though as its more easily quantifiable, ironic that BH didn't spot that...

BH, myself and doylo remade these about three years ago.  They were a lot more fun to make than play to be honest.  Had everyone we knew plus all world beasts in.  You can imagine the stoned arguments that where had.
