Title: Automated detection of boulders from satellite imagery
Post by: tomtom on December 05, 2023, 06:18:53 pm
This popped into my academic Twitter feed earlier and thought someone here might like it.

As per the thread. For anyone out searching for new boulders / boulderfields this paper has just come out with the method that’s all on GIT. They apply it on other planets but it’s also developed/trained on earth so should work fine.

This is proper science!

Just having a poke around. To save others the trouble the github repo is available here https://github.com/astroNils and the data is available here https://zenodo.org/records/8171052

Impressively straightforward getting access to all this! Great effort from the authors.

Varian will know no bounds after this.

Cool! Glad it works well... you never know with scientific code (guilty as charged!)

Cool, Will test it later on some erratics i have discovered in the past deep in the Cairngorms.

Disclaimer that I didn't actually get it up and running, not very familiar with the ml tooling. Impressed that the code and data is so easily available though.

Don't worry, no one will climb anything more than 30 minutes from the road still.

In this world nothing can be said to be certain, except death and taxes and climbers being too lazy to walk do long walk ins.

OK, I had a look and...... I haven't got a clue what it is and how you use it. Anyone care to enlighten me?

It is a python package for starters, you will need a python env set up somewhere. You can clone (copy) the python code and then run it in your python environment.

There is a walkthrough of how to get craters from moon data:

https://github.com/astroNils/rastertools/blob/main/resources/nb/GETTING_STARTED.ipynb

If you haven't used python before it won't be overly straightforward. No idea what it is like if you have as I haven't tried it.

If anyone does get it working for bouldering, it would be cool to add an idiots how to (for me).

OK, I'm out. Idiot's guide would be good.

I managed to get it working (after longer than I care to admit). Barrier to entry is simply managing to install the correct versions of packages for your python version (I had to downgrade from 3.12.0 to 3.9.6 to get this to work) for your OS. After installation, was actually fairly simple to run (using Option B in the inference - still haven't got A to work).

Could figure that out but can't figure out embeddings (on a laptop with no access to imgur etc.) but have uploaded sample image and resulting image to Google Drive. Need to figure out how to play around with parameters to limit boulder size etc. but cool that it works.

Tested on a boulderfield on the side of Mount Quandary in Colorado (haven't been but have heard of development there):
