Title: What not to wear
Post by: tommytwotone on November 23, 2004, 07:50:58 am
Obviously, being on the cutting edge of climbing fashion we're all well placed to say what's hot...and what's not

A few I've seen recently:

Baseball caps
Socks with rock boots
Football shirts

Wearing a beanie in the Matrix with your top off when it's red-hot - very sad.

BRIGHTLY COLOURED SHIRTS.

And on a more serious note, tight trousers on a bloke. Hell, tight-but-not-skin-tight trousers on a girl too. Very wrong.

Any shite t-shirt with "no fear" / "I climb to get high" / insert other cheesy strapline here.

Surely no climber would actually wear a No Fear t-shirt - strictly the preserve of the couch potato junkie.

Similar and almost as bad: Planetfear T-shirts...

prana - hippy gear at gucci prices

"the frenchman" - 3/4 length cotton lycra in a pastel shade, very baggy t-shirt, often tucked in. horizontal striped jumpers. still surprisingly popular with peak 90s throwbacks.

"the eastern bloc" - bad C&A-style cotton ski-jackets, late 80's oxfam non-branded shellsuits and bizarre ex-russian army rockboots. doesn't stop them tearing up cuvier though   . basically looks like the clothes were pushed out of the back of a low flying hercules along with some sacks of grain. also known as "dressed by the UN".

its all good.

'fashion mullets'
Tea-cosy style hats a la Bransbubble on Mushin
Christ I've even seen a burberry beanie!!!!!
There were some guys at stanage in full winter gear on saturday - bagsy me belaying!
'Wifebeater' vests over thermals - very popular in the peak.
Digicam/ videos seem to be more popular than boots and pad now too.

I seem to remeber a BBC production with Mr Pantontino in a pair of skin tight green Stone Monkey tights - some goth he was.  The excuse/cover up heard was "But it was for the tele'" - Lame, Panton, lame.

i might be wrong, but doesn't a certain Mr Moon wear a fetching no fear hat in one summer (or was it real thing??)???

come to think of it, if i remember rightly it's the tip of the sartorial iceberg seeing as it tops off:

ninjas
tights
flava wifebeater/t shirt combo

actually on climbing vid fashion, jezzle's jumper in the 'Karma' sequence in real thing?

and Kurt Albert's home made skin tight denim shorts?

I remember there were two models of Ron Hill, the trackster and the 'flash' trackster, which had an attractive vertical stripe down the side off the leg which got wider at the top - so as to increase the illusion of having grotesquely fat legs (I think Ru wears these in the hope that they might make him feel he has legs at all).

Katz has got a really good fashion crimes slide show that he did in the Heights a few years back.
I'm sure if you Sheffsiders could come up with a venue on the Peakside, he could be persuaded to perform, perhaps even modelling some early 80s tiny shorts, ultra tight adidas vest, moustache so-bad-it's-good, massive Troll 6a chalk bag, etc.

Hell, we could make a weekend of it! Hit the crags in a full retro stylee.:rocker:

On the venue tip - do you reckon it's too short notice to get one of the footie grounds. I'm not sure what numbers were talking here, but I don't want any disappointed punters locked out.

Use your connections, call in a few favours, see what you can come up with. Can I leave you to sort the security firm and the media coverage.

Word to that motherfuckers!  I think Don Valley may have space over the next few weeks with an after party (foam) @Ponds Forge (and I don't mean fingers)

After the black/lurid tight fashion of the late 80's I remember that bermuda shorts were all the fashion down our way.

Well Lancashire

I went through a phase of ripping the crotches in my trousers, I think due to doing too many rockovers. It was especially disconcerting for spotters/belayers who were always scared they would get the evil eye.

Sorted that problem out wiv some stretchy trousers now. Took a while to find some that looked like normal trousers and didn't do the whole frog leg impression thing.

So much for the days of UKB being a nice place to visit, devoid of idiots. Can't you stupid fuckers stay on your own sites?

No, we can't.

no, we can't.  in a bad mood today, scott?

in any case, refer to page 5 of this thread, wherin i was mocked -- mocked, i say -- for my style of dress.  by the same guys who used to show up in the valley in the 70's wearing euro short shorts, for godsakes.

and if you missed the self deprication that is self-evident in photo #2 of the above post...well...go cheer yourself up with some sheep jokes.

Thanks BVB for that wonderful introduction.  I think there was a photo of you sending so highball badass V100000000 on the cover of the latest Urban Muncher Magazine................oh wait a minute I'm thinking of someone else.
You are the guy with such bad dress sense that you ended up on a UKB thread.  Congratulations.  Your parents must be so proud.

My name is on the side of this post.  Just in case you were wondering what those squiggly shaped things were.

Please do not post anymore pictures of your low-ball pocketed limestone.  I enjoy the pics on B.com but yours are, how you say, an aquired taste.  Like cat food.

If you are looking to infect a uk site please try to topple www.ukclimbing.com .  I think that they would appreciate you sense of humour and of course you dress sense/facial hair/ability to self promote choss rock.

and thank you, dylan, for your warm welcome.  after all, it is the thorough pimping you dished upon my sense of style that lured me here to this fine forum in the first place.  and dragging my parents into this is, of course, a wonderful leading indicator as to your class and sense of decorum.  you rock, dude.

as for "urban muncher magazine" (must admit, never heard of it), you must have me mixed up with someone else...my last appearance on the cover of a mag was "climbing" back in '92 or '93...thanks for the plug, though.

glad you like the photos of "lowball" limestone.  i'll be sure to post many more, for your viewing pleasure.

you've tried cat food?  how is it, anyway?  is it any good mixed with top ramen?  and are your circumstances really that desperate?  good god man, we're your freinds.  give us a tip and we'll organize a food drive for you.

ah yes, one more thing...not looking to "infect" any sites...just good fun and good new friends, such as yourself.  why toddle off to ukclimbing, when we've already broken the ice here, eh?

well dylan whose name appears on the side of this post, ta, for now.  i'll leave you with another my photos of lowball choss which you clearly crave so very much.

yours,

bvb

p.s.  a bran muffin chased with a little metamucil may help you out with that little problem of yours.

bvb = bob van belle.  common knowledge on this side of the pond.

But this side of the pond, sadly, still nameless.

Are we supposed to quake and drop to our knees at the mention of your name.

Sorry to disappoint. :)

Your taste in music is ok though.

no, no, no, not irl, on the internet, man!  in the flesh i'm a blubbery old coot who sips whisky in an overstuffed chair while fondling my signed-by-bonnington first edition copy of "everest: the ultimate challenge"

however, feel free to tremble if you wish.  i'll pretend it's me and not the damp cold that's causing it.
