I know the Slipstones very well, but what are the other crags in the area like? Is there anything worth while at Brown Beck or Birk Gill? Any info other than whats in the YG Guide and the brief mention on yorkshiregrit.com would be good.
Thanks.

although I've never been there i saw some photo of brown beck soemwhere online, ans think it looked alright.

Only been once with AndyR at it rained!
He found a good looking dyno, that still hasn't been done on a free standing block below the edge. So go do it!

i'd reccomend the above book too - its got tonnes of crags in you've never heard of which look bo, e.g. scugdale - one day i'll go there and it won't rain.

Have got said book. Bought it for Goldsbrough and Slipstones mainly, but have been to some other spots, some good some poor, Crag Willas/Healaugh crag was pretty good.
-
i had the previous edition of this guide - the little one. anyone got that? was alright, got us round slipstones many times, but got it primarily for info on kepier woods, durhams premier sandstone bouldering crag.
the new guide is much better though, even if it is the size of a phonebook.

I used to have that one, it had Colin Binks in his best pink hat at Slipstones on the cover. It was responsible for me visiting the Otter stones  , a crag which i'm sure would make Kepier wood look like Hueco Tanks.

Had a browse thru the new NE Guide in shop. Looked good but not really justification for buying it. I can borrow one in Leeds.
Thanks for advice/links

Which one did you go to Francis? Brown Beck or Birk Gill? Any ideas as to which one is better and anything else worth checking out in the area?

i've been to scugdale, bridstonesand the wainstones since the new guide came out.
scugdale is very good it's got alot of short routes which some folk reckon are highballs[not me]it's got afew good travereses.black wall is pretty nice.
super skunk sitter is good v5/6.the sit start to the nose[which might befairy tale low]is brillant v6.
bridestones is pretty sandy and friable which is worrying on the up prob's.it's main attraction is the traverse's buttress 3low level v7 butt 4 v6
wainstones well i slagged s off and it payed me back.

A late PS, but Brown Beck is worth the walk in, if you are local to the area. A bit further than Slipstones, but a flat walk and not bad once acquainted with it. Loads of mini routes of similar size and quality to Slipstones, and tons more in that valley to explore. Came away with 3 new routes/problems too! http://www.climbonline.co.uk/brown_beck_crag.htm
(http://www.climbonline.co.uk/problem%2068a.jpg) is the one i was most pleased with.
