it's been a shit of a day. My Turkish mother-in-law is back in the old country for her yearly stay, my missus is pacing around the appartement. No sleep tonight.

Yep, got a mate hiding in a hotel in Ankara. Hope the Mother-in-law is good.
My mate Frank is able to post on FB, which is how I heard he was there and we exchanged comments five minutes ago (23:35 ish). So internet is functioning and Facebook is not blocked.

He says there's still fighting going on and that reports of it being "all over" might be premature.

They have all been allowed out of the hotel and it's been quite for a couple of hours. Friends of friends, on holiday in Marmaris, have also been told it's safe. Frank reckons that the aircraft, small arms and even some heavy weapons (Frank is "Ex" like me) went on all night. Seems like casualty figure of 90 might be a gloss.
He's a Pipeline engineer and expecting to be back on the job on Monday, according to the company.

Eight men believed to be part of a military coup in Turkey have requested political asylum in Greece, the Greek police ministry has said (http://www.itv.com/news/update/2016-07-16/turkish-coup-plotters-request-political-asylum-in-greece/)

Periscope and FB live put paid to the old idea that you can seize control of the media channels to give an impression that it's all done and dusted.

This coup was even more useless than the Labour one.

Strange information coming from Turkish sources that 'some' soldiers didn't realise it was a coup. They'd been told it was a training exercise.

Many will be very young conscripts and just following orders. Some might even be from the interior and really not too "up" on how things work.

Yeah, Look at some of the images of fat middle aged men punching teenage soldier on the bridges in Istanbul after they surrendered.

Also the Turks have shutdown/ cut power to the American airbase at Incirlik. My conspiracy theory bro-in-law suspects American involvement, as do 'some' Turks.

* All 'tweets' are being relayed third hand. I have no idea what is going on.

I have a pretty low responding conspiracy theory ometer - and no tin foil hats in my closet...

However this will strengthen Erdogans hand - giving him justification for his media/civil liberty crackdowns (that have already happened) and plenty of justification to take harsher measures in the coming weeks. Whether or not it's a conspiracy - meh - but ultimately most commentators are praising him and his many supporters strengths rather than asking why the coup leaders did it (from what I have gleaned it's due to his heavy hand in governance/cracking down).

I'm waiting for the canary to link this to Tony Blair ;)

Incirlik is entirely self sufficient. They could shut down access by land but a no-fly would require US cooperation. On the other hand, for the first time since WW2 there are two carrier battle groups in the Eastern Med simultaneously, as I mentioned a couple of weeks back (though one was moving west as of last Thursday according to Lloyds int). More likely Syria/Russia related  and speeding up to avoid suspicion.

It all looks like a nice publicity coup for Erdogan...tin hat spinning...

Erdogan is reported to call the coup 'a blessing from Allah'................not hard to see why. Whether the coup was a false-flag, out of the blue or encouraged by the Erdoganites doesn't seem to matter much. The result is he has tightened his already quite fascistic grip on the country. Judiciary, Police, Military, Media etc all set for further purges. Yikes.

Will be interesting to see how the USA respond to his call for Gulen to be extradited. Yet another complication in the Syrian situation

If only that weren't true...

This is doing the rounds amongst my Arabic friends today:

Edit:
Jeez! Just catching up with the news, 6000 detainees! 2700 judges! It's Stalinesque. And to complete the cliché, I'm hearing quotes where "he" is lauding Hitler's rise to power and offering it as a model to solve Turkey's woes...

We are living through some surreal times...
