Title: Penrith area bivi sites
Post by: andyd on April 28, 2016, 05:42:05 pm: I'm boat building on a course this bank holiday weekend in Penrith. The plan is to bivi to save money. Does anyone know of any decent bivi spots that might be a little sheltered. Snow and rain is the dominant theme for the weekend.

Criteria-all or some of the below

Some shelter (caves or heavily overhung?)
Safe (ish) parking
Near a warm pub?
Trees to string up a tarp for sleeping under

Any help or knowledge would be much appreciated.

Post by: thekettle on April 28, 2016, 07:45:54 pm: Without hiking way up into the mountains (to the Priest Hole on Dove crag for example), there's not much near Penrith I can think of. Cowrake Quarry you could probably get away with if you use a tarp between trees, but watch out for dog turds, johnnies etc. Nearest decent sized caves are the slate ones such as Millican Dalton's cave in Borrowdale, which has a tendency to occasionally shed blocks from the ceiling (don't light fires in there, some say the heat from them causes it). Nicest one would be Millican's cave (he lived in it for a good few years!), short walk from Grange in Borrowdale. Assuming you're not squashed by a huge block of slate.

Is that the red sandstone crag by a river? I have some recollection of a Leo holding pic there in the 90s :dance1:

Post by: carlisle slapper on April 28, 2016, 09:37:20 pm: Dunmallard hill (woods) opposite pooley bridge fits the bill, easy parking and should be ok to keep a low profile as the forest is quite dense. should be fine for a night. Beacon Hill in Penrith is fairly busy with dog walkers but should be fine too.

If its caves you're looking for then, this spot should be quiet. http://www.megalithic.co.uk/article.php?sid=30622 i've not been so have no idea if its overlooked.
