As I'm updating my laptop to a Centrino motherfukka I wondered if any of you guys know of any free wifi places in London. I've done a few searches of the legal type sites and I can find about 3. There must be some website that has the 411 on this type of stuff (and yes i have tried wifi411.com!) a I don't want to go to Everest base camp to get connected

It's generally called Wardriving - or more specifically Warchalking:
So if you see these on the pavement outside your house, you've been warchalked:

I think it's cool in theory, though my wireless LAN is WEP protected, if there was an easy way of freeing up a bit of bandwidth for public access then I would do....just no demand for it here, I never detect any other networks round here, but then most of my neighbours are old folks.

Cheers :D
I'd heard about the war chalking stuff, but it's just started to rain
I like the idea of the open node stuff. I have been looking at a few co-operatives that look very interesting. Will report back with any news :8)
Meanwhile if you hear of any web or MIRC that keeps an up to date list let me know :007:

What the hell are you all on about? This sounds mental, there's people outside my house putting chalk everywhere? I know donkey lines are increasingly common, but this is ridiculous.
Seriously though, what is all this WiFi stuff? How do I get involved?

Try http://consume.net/twiki/bin/view/Main/ConsumeFAQs
and http://auth.sown.org.uk/
Plans to get open nodes all over the city so that we can surf the web from all over the place :D
-
I've never seen any or heard of anyone who has - nice idea though.
The only thing to be wary of when opening up your own connection is people downloading kiddie pr0n or the like through it. Might have a hard time explaining that it was some stranger rather than yourself.....
-
OK got the 411. Check out http://consume.net
I've just found Wifi that I can pick up from the house
Once you log on you can search by postcode
-
Cool....though my nearest node is 800 meters away!
Also, check this (http://auth.sown.org.uk/) out for allowing safe public access to your network.

I didn't know you'd moved, so what's the old folks home really like?
-
heh heh - it's cool - I get the drips of slaver wiped off my gob by hot nurses in fishnets
