Title: Peak Area Meet, AGM and Quiz next Weds 18th
Post by: shark on November 12, 2015, 01:21:41 pm
Wednesday 18th November, 7.30pm at The Maynard, Grindleford.

Go here (http://community.thebmc.co.uk/Event.aspx?id=3506&utm_source=BMC+Monthly+Newsletter+Subscribers&utm_campaign=741a1f6bb3-Peak+Nov15&utm_medium=email&utm_term=0_06481fa93e-741a1f6bb3-1107849) for:

•   Agendas for the Meetings
•   Notes from the 2014 AGM
•   Notes from the Ordinary Meeting that took place on the 9th September 2015
•   A copy of the latest Peak Area newsletter - full of the most recent access issues and more.

A new Chair and Secretary, will be voted in to take over from Neil and Lynn (thanks for all the good work  :2thumbsup: )

Rebekah Newman the head honcho of the Peak District National Park Authority will be there and updating us no doubt about the impact of the further DEFRA grant cut. She will also have some ‘Stanage Stickers’ for sale along with some ring ouzel mugs and t-shirts, so please bring along some cash.

After the butties and chips (paid for by the BMC) it’s the annual quiz.

After UKB's defeat by the UKC table no less we need Cofe and Jonboy back on the team and some hillwalkery types

What's the ring ouzel t-shirt? I might be interested in getting one, but when I googled, all I found was this bizarre offering:

This surely is the design for the next ukb T-shirt?

Great t-shirt design. And certainly not further evidence that access to graphic design software should be subject to strict regulations.

Mark20, Rob Greenwood and myself.

In interests of diversity I'm afraid to say that an encyclopedic knowledge of the 1989 Stanage guide and The Power of Climbing probably won't be enough to seal victory this year.

I've never produced a quiz (you have to win it first and the winning tables have been knowledge monsters) I've just 'pushed' it as I was so impressed with the quality in recent years.  The other point I've been impressed with is the area committee and the quiz sponsors managing to get prizes for most of the teams, but I have a conflict of interest in that area so am less noisy about it. Its all a great fun celebration of what we love and partly a thank you for the local area efforts keeping things accessible.

I wouldn't get your hopes up this time round, the last few years have seen some tough acts to follow. I suspect the bar is about to be reset.

Despite my previous post I'm please to confirm the charades round will be making its customary appearance.

Cheers, I'd considered that. Presumably it won't embed on the forum though and people will have to download it individually?

If you do the later then don't just upload it, convert it to Google Slides then no one will actually have to downloaded and can instead view it in their browser.

Caveat : It might not actually convert due to the secret file specification of M$-Oriffice documents (they did at some point kick around the idea of developing and using open formats but wanted to use their own specification with secret bits rather then the existing Open Document formats (http://www.fsf.org/campaigns/opendocument) :wall: )

Think you can export individual slides out of Powerpoint as JPGs. Try save as and change the filetype. You'll need to bung them somewhere like flickr you can then embed. Good work by they way.

That question was the cause of much head scratching and puzzled expressions last night, perhaps reflecting the age profile of the room....

....but I can confirm that not only are you 100% correct, but that I just found and watched the video in question, and I am now officially a member of the yoof.

Question 3: first quote is john Allen talking about west side story

2 points to Guy

question 8: Leo Holding on the left?

Yes

question 4: Cyanide and Happiness - The Rope. Panda and a Piano

....but I can confirm that not only are you 100% correct, but that I just found and watched the video in question, and I am now officially a member of the yoof.

I'm glad someone got that right. I was starting to get a bit worried last night when we were only at question 4 and I had 50 blank faces staring back at me.

Still plenty more answers to find.

Unfortunately, you've still only got two in the right order (but one of them is different from last time). I'll confirm that Revelations is the easiest

RE: Question 11 - I dunno who it is but are they jumping off Froggatt pinacle?

It's Richie Patterson (see above) but yes, have a bonus point for Froggatt pinnacle.

I'm off out for the afternoon. I'll review any answers and post up the last 10 questions later.

It is known as Cook's Leap, history is on t'other channel

Has Q9 been answered? It's J-Moff on Edge Lane isn't it?

Not that I can see. Right route, wrong climber I'm afraid.

It's Wolfgang Gullich

It is. A lot of people said Moffatt or Mark Leach

There is a Moffatt related question that no one seems to have answered yet

Must be Q8, the mustachio-ed guy with the curly perm and shades  :dance1:

question 13: Roaches (lower tier, standing on top of Valkyrie?) and Tittesworth resevoir

also is question 15 the sloth?

You want to get yourself to the peak area quiz next year!

Do you allow London run aways masquerading as Yorkshire? I'm sure I could drum a team up  :)

Yes, as far as I know (good effort by the way).

In hindsight the quiz was probably pitched a little bit hard but going through the questions with Rob on Monday we kept thinking they were all piss and everyone would get them. Guess it's easy when you know the answers  ;)

I was amazed that in a room full of peak climbers no one could recognise Moffatt (apart from the team who wrote it down as the answer, but then crossed it out!)

By my count still answers to find for Q2, Q3 (bottom 2 quotes), Q5, Q6, Q7 (Right hand trig point), Q10 (2 routes), Q16,17 and 18.

I'm guessing UKB won't be big on the walking type questions but we were asked to put a few in this year.

Negative I'm afraid. This question was definitely more aimed at the walkers than the climbers. I don't think anyone got it on the night though.

Point for Ron but you fell into the deliberate trap with the route I'm afraid. Clue, it's in the Peak.

Will - Both right. The first one's not that easy even with a map.

Was it Darius? I seem to remember Al Evans goading him into repeating/inventing his catch phrase.

My boss' boss at work has at one time had a photo of Ron Fawcett on his desk and his catch phrase, when faced with a particularly tricky problem, is "Come on brain, do your stuff". Nobody else in the office has a fucking clue what he's on about!

Nonsense. The table distributions need sorting out for next year (it wasn't all UKB fault as a certain BMC exec joined that table) but the best team only got about twice the points of the worst and the hillwalker table did OK, so I'd say spot on. Pretty much everyone got a prize and I liked taking the tiny (less than a fraction of a person, cf the millions in team UKB?)  bottom team up second.

 :agree:

Howabout teams of 6 or 8.   Both times I've attended the quiz, its been great fun, and pitched about right, there were questions that I would never have got, yet someone on our team knew and visa versa. Since I've ended up on tables where I don't know half the people on the table, its been a good to meet some folks and put names to faces etc.  Mixing it up in future a bit would be a good exercise in folks meeting other folks they might not otherwise mingle with.

We on only had 4 people in our team and I felt did very well, only coming a handful of points behind the winning team which despite all the joshing above, had easily twice the number of members of the next biggest team, but hey, like the murphys...  :P

I think the UKB table would have still won if there was only a certain 4 people on it (myself not included)  :-[. They only came second last year so it is possible to beat them. Quiz was great, it's not easy and I think you did a fine job.

Some years one person might even have won it on his own. Moff was chuffed to bits when she knew something no one else did on the UKB table a few years back and she is no slouch.

Q2: Kinder, Woodhead, Edale, Buxton, Glossop (reasonably sure on these) plus somewhere south Peak (Matlock?) and somewhere for Chew/Black Hill (Holmfirth, Uppermill?)

Q17: Ullswater, Thirlmere, Wastwater, Buttermere

The answer I was looking for was Dovedale and the hill is indeed Thorpe Cloud. Given the slightly ambiguous wording of the question I would have awarded points for other answers* (apart from to the UKB team, who rather smugly identified the bouldering location I was stood at when the photo was taken).
