Title: Sprained thumb (?)
Post by: dunnyg on January 03, 2015, 12:39:47 pm
So, i've hyper extended my thumb, and its swollen a little bit and doesnt really function. I've done similar things before, so know it will fix in a few weeks max. Does anyone know if climbing on it, or fingerboarding (obviously not using the thumb) will have a negative effect on recovery? I thought fingerboarding would probably be better as it is more controlled. Open handing stuff doesn't hurt it at all, but I can't pinch anything at all. I can just about hold 150ml of water in a glass, and that hurts...

cheers!

Irregardless of  mechanisim of injury I'd give all the usual Internet advice....

As in.. ignore it and access the NHS for what is a significant injury to your most important digit.

For goodness sake. I told you you'd best adapt to a two handed stroke after you used this:

You can't expect to handle the girth with just one of your puny hands.

Will, I can't believe you went to all that trouble of photoshopping out your bedside table to post this pic.

Well played sam, or is that dave?

Yeah, thumb function is improving rapidly. I guess I would rather not waste GP time if it will fix itself in the next few days. Sound advice though.

Other than repeating fatdoc's advice, I hyper extended my thumb a while back and it took about 18-24 months to fully resolve and would suggest that if it's a proper injury you get someone proper to look at it.
