Title: Internet provider for Sheffield
Post by: Baron on August 28, 2013, 10:24:55 am
Currently with Virgin on a cable connection at £22.50/month, broadband only. Don't want a landline.
Is there anything cheaper out there people could recommend?
Thanks.

Not cheaper, but if you don't want to stay with Virgin or switch to Sky I'd recommend Origin Broadband (http://www.origin-broadband.co.uk/)

With virtually everyone bar Virgins cable you have to rent a phone line even if you don't use it.

Origin are Yorkshire based, you get to speak to people who listen to you rather than reading from a script, and its fibre to the box, so quite fast, even on their basic offering (I'm pretty close to my nearest box though).

The downside is that the Digital Region initiative to get high-speed broadband into South Yorkshire recently announced its closure (http://www.digitalregion.co.uk/closure-of-digital-region-now-offers-best-deal-for-public-purse) so if there isn't already fibre to your local box I doubt it will be installed anytime soon.  Its also unclear how Origin will proceed at present.

A cheaper option you may wish to consider is PlusNet, but they often have caps on data/month and I found the advertised speeds were plucked from the air (possibly due to throttling).
