No... not domestic abuse, I'm using the Australian vernacular for a singlet...

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeveless_shirt (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sleeveless_shirt)
Having been a scrawny pale skinned little shit for most of my younger life I avoided such garments like the plague..
But, now after 20 odd years of on and off climbing I have a bit more bulk around the shoulders/arms (I'm now a not so scrawny around the shoulders pale skinned lanky middle aged shit) and wondered about getting such an item for bouldering (not wanting to chafe or expose the rest of my pidgeon chest to the rest of the world).
So, questions -
1. are they any good or should I just carry on wearing a T shirt and stop asking stupid questions?
2. If they are any good are there any decent alternatives to the Moon ones (good as they are I'm sure) that everyone else seems to wear?
3. Has the sun got to me and should I go have a cold bath, some tamazipan and an early night?
Yours banally,
TT

I like them. you'll feel like a bit of a tool to begin with, but it's def cooler than a t-shirt, and you get used to it. Still felt like an idiot wearing mine when I went for a run today though. My moon one is nicer than my blocfest one, but I think thats just because it fits a bit better tbh.

Not really. Though I am feeling mildly aroused having seen that picture ;)

Haven't you got papers to write Tom?

3 in review.... and its too hot to think ;)

Frankly I prefer them to going bare chested (which tends to lead to chaffed nipples in my experience)...
I happen to think I look rather dashing in my Singlet, Darcyesque really...
Maybe not...
Toolesque.
And old...
Very old.

Possibly even saggy...

Oh boy i hope you´re just kidding.
H&M for 5 GBP ?
Instead of 20 Bucks for the moon ones?
http://www.hm.com/gb/product/02737?article=02737-A (http://www.hm.com/gb/product/02737?article=02737-A)
No print on it but i´m pretty sure they´re made in the same sweatshop as the moons are.(or at least in one next to the one).
Or if you are more into human rights and stuff maybe american apparel?

Decathlon all the way :punk:

The moon ones are organic FWIW. Dunno where they're made though.

Felt very self-conscious wearing a vest the first few times I hit the climbing gym (I'm fairly pale and skinny with a little lean muscle, but I'm not really bothered about this), but now I don't feel as comfortable wearing a t-shirt instead. If anyone is bothered by the sight of this, they aren't paying enough attention to their climbing...
-
I dare anyone to wear one like Welford has in PTOC.
-
What's the problem with vests?
-
I feel like I've aged prematurely, however, I was GIVEN one of those fancy wicking berghaus (I know) T-shirts a while ago (Three Nine caught two at a climbing competition and handed me one, see, he isn't a total twat) and it's bloody fantastic (apart from making me feel like I'm turning into my Dad).
It's much cooler than a standard t-shirt, it dries faster when wet (or sweaty). Again, bloody fantastic. I believe Decathlon make these too (for considerably less).
Failing that I wear and old BBC vest that is definitely more yellow than white these days.
-
What's the problem with vests?
You've the torso for a vest FD..
Worked the vest & Brompton combo yet? ;)
-
I have a favourite old (20 years?) vest (umbro), where the hem line has shrunk and distorted into a Sine wave (Amp ~50mm, WL ~100mm).
It's like an old friend.
Somewhere between a tank top and a running vest.
Gives me immense power and inhuman grip.
Until I wake up.
-

You've the torso belly for a vest FD
-
A thread about vests and Jim still hasn't replied. He's either at The Moor or the bread dispenser is blocked and he's de-clogging it with a broom.
If you will feel 'conspicuous' wearing a vest TT wait till you've been in the sun for a day. Wife Beater tan lines! The only look that aces a saggy white vest, slippers and a can of stella.
You will be then called Cletus and asked if your wifes your mum etc...
-
Tesco doing some comfy vests this year (slightly ribbed, branded F&F)
cost a couple of Fuck-Alls
plenty of stretch in them, arm holes big enough to allow for a climber's delts + lats
sizing reasonable - a small amount of shrinkage after a few 40 deg washes
not that I've actually climbed in them, but the local single mothers seem to appreciate the look while I walk back from Asda with a 10 pack of Stella in each hand
-
Just cut the sleeves and neck out of an old tee shirt.
-
:D
-
I am a big fan of vests, but if it's hot I prefer barechested.
I have bought many from H&M for ridiculous prices, no need to pay more unless it's a very cool one.
I also have a couple of compression/thermal vests that are of great help in winter.
Not the case now.

Actually not bad...
29 here in Siena, but 33 and humid in Florence!
Still not perfect 8b temps though...
:)
-
I love vests and I love a vest tan even more.
I prefer to be bare chested when its absolutely boiling but my current flabbyness means this is too embarassing so vests all the way for me
-
T-shirt or tops off for power, I don't mess about in between. I bought a vest a month ago to try but I didn't find it much cooler than a t-shirt and then thought, fuck it and went back to tops off.
If you're too self-conscious about weight then hide the cakes or man up. Use it as motivation to start a diet, like when women decide to lose weight because they'll be wearing a bikini soon...
-
Or just wear a Bikini?

Climb in the shed on your own.

Shave the hair from your arms and pretend you're wearing a furry vest.
Anyone else amused by the irony of simultaneous threads praising the glories of vests referred to as "wife beaters" and castigating t-shirts that raise money for cancer!? ... funny old world...

grim, but ironic
I am actually uncomfortable with the term Wife Beater - not it's use by other people or even in my own writing; I just don't feel comfortable saying it
with a simple logo someone could sell Wife Beaters Against Domestic Violence
almost as unfunny as cancer
every time I hear "but only when I deserve/ask for it" or "apparently I give as good as I get" I feel that there should be some sort of QI style buzzer that goes off - connected to a high voltage electrode fastened to their "partner"
I also drink Stella

Organic cotton is just a marketing bogus.
In 99% Organic Cotton is still sewn in Sweatshops. If organic cotton gets shipped from Afrika to south east asia and back, the whole thing becomes obsolet.
-
so, if I play my cards right, I could sell something called a Wife Beater that exploits/oppresses children with a low life expectancy in its production to people who want the world to know that they use some of their money to fight against a disease that affects people in proportion to their life expectancy?
and it would be organic
I would say something like "god helps those who help themselves", but that might be seen by The Christian Right Conspiracy and I don't want to be on the wrong side of them come the end of the world
I stick with my Tesco recommendation
-
organic is just the way the cottonfields are farmed. low co2-footprint, no biocides, no chemical fertilizer etc.
doesn´t say anything about the way the cotton is manufactured and shipped after the harvest.
even if it is better than nothing, it still is almost nothing.
Did you really think a H&M shirt that sells for 5 GBP and has printed some "organic blabla" on the tag is sewn in a country where people are treated fair?
http://www.hm.com/gb/product/01684?article=01684-A (http://www.hm.com/gb/product/01684?article=01684-A)
the tag says clearly bangladesh
it´s just a distraction so that those hippsters think they are so ethical sophisticated
-
Vests - Depends on how you wear em..
I rekon you can rock that look TT
-

Just a bit of chemistry pedantry but no chemical fertilizer? - what do they use as fertilizer then?
Everything is "chemical", you me, the world, the universe - we are all made of chemicals - the inference that "chemicals" are "bad" is oft made and entirely unhelpful
Other than that I agree whole heartedly with your point - it's the same "total environmental audit" thing that most hybrid cars fail appallingly on.
As for 'beaters - Mrs T's rule is that you shouldn't wear them if your shoulders just melt down into your arm with no discernible distinction and change in definition between the two - seems a fair assessment to me.
-

Mine don't and I still look like an absolute tool in one.
-
Nowt wrong with a wife beater in appropriate weather...

There's Bangladesh and Bangladesh though innit. http://about.hm.com/content/hm/aboutsection/en/About/Sustainability/Commitments/Responsible-Partners/Supply-Chain.html (http://about.hm.com/content/hm/aboutsection/en/About/Sustainability/Commitments/Responsible-Partners/Supply-Chain.html) H and M actually seem to be doing something about their supply chain. I assume there's no A/C in most clothing factories in Asia, so I guess they are all 'sweatshops'.
Containerised shipping on boats is quite low carbon per kilo.
Organic is not necessarily low carbon.
-
Just checked the label on my moon top, "made in turkey" , I believe they're relatively good on working conditions.
-
Back from H&M, £9 lighter, but in the posession of one blue vest and one yellow one (with hipster style extra dropped armpits). I shall model them for the greater good (???) of the UKB community in the coming weeks ;) It feels odd having cold shoulders though..
-
Oh god Tom, you're not wearing them Saturday are you?
:-[ nowt wrong with a good vest.
-
They all claim to be good with working conditions. Then the place they work with contracts out all the work elsewhere. Life isn't fair, so don't expect the people who make your clothes to be happy bunnies. :worms:
-
I stick with my Tesco recommendation
Is that for buying Stella or vests?
-

When I lived in Dubai, I had many long conversations with the guys who came from these countries and their response to the "why do you do it" question was always the same.
It's better than life in the village.
That's not a defense of exploitation. That grips my shit.
But we in the west do forget the context and have a rose tinted view of the rural life...

stella is cheaper at Asda

yeah and since the guys at h&m claiming about themself that they are a good good brand it has to be true.
There are many independent insitutions like the CCC or the fair wear foundation who will tell you the opposite.
yeah shipping in containers is better that per plain but producing the garments in europe or egypt (where most cotton is from) would be less carbon than two times half around the globe.

thats the thing with believing. google begs to differ.

Firstly I didn't say H&M were 'good', just that they were trying to be responsible and do something about their supply chain, which is a lot more than a lot of companies. This is an interesting read on the subject http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/apr/07/hennes-mauritz-h-and-m (http://www.guardian.co.uk/business/2012/apr/07/hennes-mauritz-h-and-m)
I note that they also signed up to the fire safety accord in Bangladesh http://www.cleanclothes.org/news/2013/05/14/more-brands-commit-to-the-accord-on-fire-building-safety-in-bangladesh (http://www.cleanclothes.org/news/2013/05/14/more-brands-commit-to-the-accord-on-fire-building-safety-in-bangladesh)
Fast fashion is here to stay, and where I don't buy much from these sort of places myself, plenty do. I often think CCC and similar organisations could do more good highlighting which companies offer the best option, rather than just highlighting negative news.
The global market and production is here to stay too, Yvon Chouinard writes about it well in Let My People Go Surfing. Egypt to Bangladesh ain't that far really, I guess that's why the shipping canals are so busy!

And that exactly is the point. Take this thread.
Someone starting a thread about crappy tank tops. willing to pay 20 bucks for some sweatshop shirt with a moon logo on it instead of spending the same amount of money for a blank no name shirt made under fair conditions.
The consumtion of things that unnecessary and especially the "outdoor-scene" is full of it. people who think they need special pants and softshells for gymclimbing. Not to forget approach shoes for that hard rides on the bus and subway. i think you know what i mean.
If the people would only buy stuff they really need it would make a difference.
