So, after another bout of tweeting / twittering over the last few days I think / hope we've finalised a date and location for the next UKB social evening.
We'll be off to The Sheaf on Saturday 29th June, I'd imagine meeting at around 7pmish - I gather it's also a certain blone-haired, Brighton-supporting member's birthday that week too so there's extra reason for celebration.
Hope to see plenty of UKBers in attendance!

Nice one twotone, I'll be there. #CANS
-
I'm going to be at the sheaf getting lashed. If you dickheads are there too thats cool. Haven't told Andy that we're staying at his again till riiiiiiigggggghhhhttt ...........now!
-
I'll make my way down, will be good to meet some folks. Will anyone be climbing before it?
-
At a wedding so missing another :slap:
I am sure I will be able to get one eventually

We going to do some trad the day after? Maybe High Tor? If you're lucky the weather will be shit again...
-
The missus is due to drop around then so looks like I'll have to give this a miss... have fun though! :icon_beerchug:
-
Just a bump for this - see anyone who's coming in The Sheaf at about 7pm.
Cheers! :icon_beerchug:

Let's get fucked up
-
Nik are you still going? room for a fat one? wedding got cancelled so am free this weekend
-
Completely forgot about this. I think I'll still be going but need to check, I'll let you know.
-
I would have considered meeting a few folks and making a weekend trip of it.
But i have a pal staying over on Saturday, and am dragon boat racing in that Swindon on the Sunday.
Plus i get nosebleeds at latitudes north of Birmingham.
-
Despite the long journey, I'll be there - as usual I'll be the one at the bar chatting to an attractive woman who probably isn't my wife
I have a small pot of hakarl (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H%C3%A1karl) in the fridge - if people are interested in partaking of this unusual substance I'm happy to bring it along. I'm not allowed to open it in the house or keep it in the fridge once it has been opened and there's no way I can finish it in one sitting (IKR!), so looking for an opportunity to share it - Sheaf garden should be fine. Anyone else interested?
-
I'm actually available so will almost certainly be there - are we taking on the Heeley Boulder befoe hand?
-

I realised afterwards that I failed to congratulate you on your ascent of the left arete from sitting yesterday (including topping out) due to being too busy taking the piss.
Sorry about that.
Good effort.
-
On the 29th I will be dining with hundreds of people in my Contrada, the mighty Istrice, for the first day of the Palio di Siena!
I will lift a glass with you all!

It was actually from standing but regardless the piss taking was more than justified I suspect. ;)

Is this the sheaf on Fraser Road?

No - 25 Gleadless Rd, Sheffield, South Yorkshire S2 3AA

That stuff sounds crazy - presumably it is some sort of hallucinogenic too, or would that just be your eyes watering from the ammonia? I've got a funny feeling I would like it - I do like lime pickle after all (although I suspect this is a different league altogether to yer average curry condiment).
Won't be able to make the session as I'm supposed to be in a van near a beach somewhere on Anglesey (and/or the Lleyn).

 Just seen this memo. Considering my demise from renting a swish pad to a room at a mates house you may wish to organise alternative arrangements Rob.
I'll be there by the way.

It sounds truly revolting!!
But yea I'll try it  - Just gotta work at getting a pass out from the Mrs now (gonna be tricky as I've already committed to doing the Tideswell fell race on Friday - fingers x'd)

Ladies and Gentlemen, you will be no doubt enraged and depressed to hear that this weekends UKB Pissup will be feature a guest appearance from one time poster and serial downgrader, the one and only Le Grande Ventre himself - Sloper.
Be prepared to be entertained by such riveting tales as "When I was on a VS in Wales and got a bit off line and ended up 70ft up an E5", "When I sandbagged Dave Graham in Font", "When I engaged Johhny Dawes in a bout of naked Greco-Roman wrestling (Private School rules)" and many others*.
Please ensure that your piss taking engines have been specially tuned and are running at maximum boost pressure for this most momentous of occasions as they will no doubt be exercised fully.
NB. Anyone who is actually enraged and depressed about this I heartily recommend that you console yourselves with the fact that it is only for one evening and not for the weekend which is the truly delightful option that I have undertaken for your dubious pleasure.
*Some of these examples may have exaggerated or even completely made up to make this post sound better than it is!
-
You're all in for treat.
Over many years of cyber argument I'd never actually met Sloper and then just the day after he reappeared here I turned up at Harmers to find him insitu. It didn't turn into a pitched battle over Neo-liberalism etc., etc. yadda, yadda, yadda.
Now we just need the second coming of the Dark Lord, aka Houdini.

Sounds like I'm going to miss a good night out, but sadly I'll be in London sticking upholstery pins into Pandas.......
-
I reckon I met Sloper (can't be that many Peak-based boulderers who smoke cigars at the crag) at Stanage when all the snow was there. Seemed like a nice guy, encouraging and only made one comment about "lefties". Reminded me how much internet forums can bring out the worst in people.
I might come but I don't drink so not particularly psyched for the pub. Is there some kind of pre-pissup climbing planned?
-
I met up with sloper in London for a few drinks a few years back. He told a story about when he was on a VS in Wales and got a bit off line and ended up 70ft up an E5. Not sure if he has told anyone else but a very good story.
-
I've met Sloper loads of times, he's a cunt. :beer2:
-

Leaving us to put down his tent in Font which upon closer inspection didn't only stink like it'd had the sweaty oaf in it all week but had also been the pissing ground for half of the peak district's cats tends to bring out the worst in me
I'll look forward to catching up with the old Pheasant Plucker!
:D

Now you mention it I think I had a similar experience when meeting a well-spoken fellow at Burbage North. I had my[size=0pt] suspicions and the penny finally dropped when he blazed up a cigar.
Not sure what my plans are tomorrow - in the interests of getting / keeping my pass out I'm spending the day time with my good lady, but could pop over for a look at that new Heeley Boudler if it's dry / anyone fancies it?

That would be amazing... I'll never forget his first post. Crazy, twisted stuff...

Someone raise a half of weissbier in my honour, :please:

I had somehow forgotten that - thanks so much for the reminder! :-\
No doubt that Font story will get a good airing tomorrow night along with a critique of his exquisite dress sense on the day of my 40th on the same trip. ;)
-
I bumped into Sloper at the recent crag clean up that is Tremfest. He was his usual affable self; it was good to see him again.

Have fun gents.... wish I could join you.

;)
that bloke with the tiny head was proper freaky
I only managed to steal 2 or 3 drinks before someone noticed
-
My hands are shredded from pissed up ascents of (and attempts on) the new Heeley boulder. That rotten shark stuff smelled as bad as it's description.
-
It was bloody awful - I instantly regretted my bravado at wanting to try some.
Good to see everyone, had a great night...right up to the point where I left my phone in the taxi from The Sheaf to the train station. :furious:
-
My hands are shredded from pissed up ascents of (and attempts on) the new Heeley boulder.
That was very amusing to say the least - what was not so amusing was finding out at 2AM this morning that I had left my cigarettes there resulting in walking back to retrieve the bloody things. ::)
-
I can still smell and taste the shark. It got worse with each piece.
Good night. Very funny.
Take it you haven't got your phone back Tom.
-
Can't believe that happened after we were discussing leaving your phone in a taxi earlier in the evening.
Don't need to worry about the crack in the screen now anyway..... :(
-
So...kudos to Mercury taxis, callled them yesetrday and the driver has found (and kept hold of my phone).
Turns out they're not allowed to keep lost property, so they offered to get him to drop it at the police station...when I mentioned that wasn't going the be the best solution they've passed on my number to him so hoping he'll give me a call and I can arrange getting it back.

Adge, I'll be more than happy to have you as my guest for next Palio, to make you sure that the horses are considered the most important element of this tradition. We make sure that nothing happens to them, and they are generally kept away from any sort of danger, except the ones that are part of any horse race.
EDIT.
Really disappointed by your negative karma. The Palio, in the modern form, dates back to the XVII century, and its original form back to the XIV: saying it's not culture, and saying poor horses shows your complete lack of any knowledge whatsoever about this. I grew up in this athmosphere and I'm really disappointed by how easily you judge things from a PC screen.

Horse racing itself is cruel. That's another matter.
Do you honestly think naturally skittish horses arent enduring their personal hell in all that melee. Regardless of physical injury, they will be terrified. Is that acceptable. It's not ok to cause mental suffering as long as no physical injury is done. Cruelty is cruelty, animal abuse is animal abuse. Enough is enough.

Adge, the horses you see there, come from a special breed that's been created specifically for the Palio. They are raised to be at ease in those situations, and had you ever been there at least once, you'd agree with me. There's nothing cruel, I can assure you.
But you can keep your opinion obviously.
I'd like to point out once again that you have a very very limited knowledge that comes only from videos. Please at least show some respect and do not judge.

if it's disrespectful to speak for animals and be a voice for the voiceless, then disrespectful I'll always be.
And yes, i have good experience with horses, not just on video.

Read my post. You don't have experience of the Palio.
Anyway, enough for me.

seriously puntering someone for their culture is shitty. You may disagree with it but they way you have come across in those posts is very intolerant. You seem to of ignored what nibs has said and just ranted for the sake of it.
-
However, using "culture" and "heritage" as a way of defending a situation which could cause potential harm to animals is also shitty. But as Nibs says, I've never been to this event so can't really comment.
-
This is a first for me ....... I'm used to there being a fight at a piss up between people who are actually there ......

the Italian tourism minister wouldn't list Palio as one of Italy heritage events because of cruelty concerns.
To condone or not speak out against cruelty for the sake of culture or heritage is no good. I oppose this, British fox hunting, Spanish bull fighting, US bear baiting, regardless of nationality, culture, or heritage.
At this event 50 horses died in last 30 years. Many many more in training. Plenty of reports by league against cruel sports, and many Italian and international animal welfare groups. Even Italian government concerned about its cruelty.
If a fox hunter, bull fighter, pamplona runner, bear baiter, supporter of cruel 'culture' etc posts on here about something i disagree with, I'll raise awareness about it.
To say i puntered Nibs because of his culture isn't true. It was my reaction to a non climbing spectacle i find morally repugnant on a climbing forum. Fair enough i think.
Plus i rarely punter, dont like doing it and as last time i puntered someone, i had just signed in to award Nibs a wad point to restore his karmic balance. Shant do that right now. It'd now feel like a climbdown, rather than good faith & a goodwill gesture to Nibs.

Just answer 2 other points
yes i am 'very intolerant' of cruelty
ranted for the sake of the horses, and to raise awareness. Not 'for the sake of it'

Thanks for the personal abuse. That's really insightful. You'll get some attention despite having nothing worthwhile to add, as usual.

Well maybe not puntering in the first place would of been better. You raise some good points, but puntering was harsh, and adding one back doesn't change anything.
-
:rtfm: :agree:
lol
so. Ok to punter sloper for his odious political views! Nibs is not immune. Or is he a special case? Do explain i haven't got the hang of who its ok to criticise and who not.
Apparently its ok to give me personal abuse! Join in. MOO?
Sorry lagers. That was aimed at sheeps, sorry Snoops
you know I've got your back

Ummh, I don't think i've joined in abusing u (moo??!), I simply pointed out that perhaps as YOU posted 'you were thinking of rebalancing the karma for nibs' that maybe you shouldn't of been so quick to punter. Now your taking that as abuse?
This thread is now becoming a cocktalk style thread, and I'm complicit in it, so I'm out of here and off to seek forgiveness....

Adge has requested that his account is deleted which I've done.
His posts seem to have changed to "crimp" which I assume was a previous user name and is a glitch in the system.

Not the first time...
-
Not sure Sloper it's a good analogy either as I'm pretty sure most preferred to engage in discussion and argument rather than reaching for the punter button if they disagreed with his political views.
And he did actively seek punter points as a badge of honour/being a cunt. ;)
-
For fuck's sake, I liked Adge's posts. He did engage in discussion and argument, in addition to reaching for the punter button. I didn't realise puntering was such a big deal either.
I know nothing about the Palio and have no interest in the argument, but I don't think anything he said was invalid or that voicing his opinion was out of line. People deleting their accounts after attempting to engage in discussion and argument and being met with personal abuse is not going to make for a better forum.

This.
I thought Adge made fair points, and while nibs is free to disagree I think bitching about the puntering and posting a vid then complaining when he was judged by it is a bit rich.
-
So, are we saying that we're intolerant of cruelty of animals, the facts about the Palio do speak for themselves, cultural tradition or not, or that we're intolerant of cruelty to nibile, puntering someone for their slightly misguided 'it's always been like this so there's no reason to change it' view does seem slightly harsh, but without criticism there's no education .........
-
What I can't get my head round is all this hoo-ha over a punter point. I've had my fair share, some deserved, some less so (my most recent for disagreeing with people getting their knickers in a twist over some melodramatic climbing reportage in the popular press). I think its an occupational hazard of posting an opinion on the board. Sooner or later someone is going to disagree with you.
I still think Lancashire Grit fucking garbage.
Knobheads...
-
to inacurately paraphrase someone else totally out of context....
Nice one, personal abuse on a thread that started off about an important bouldering symposium. N you lot say people are responsible for saying what they believe. You've all just took away the point of a group of boulderers and semi-boulderers drinking beer and chatting and made subsequent interested readers think ukb is a last bastion of knobheads. Can I suggest a thread entitled "abusing people for posting their opinions"
May I suggest one or in rare circumstances two offensive remarks in a thread then get back on track with the original point. Keeps it fresh and slightly interesting
for christ sake, there haven't even been any good puns
I assumed that Dense was good friends with Adge and that calling him a knobhead was crag-like banter
lol!
hitler etc.
-

The difference is you're not as cool as Nibs.
Don't take it personally. No one is.

But there are people starving in in the world who probably don't give 2 shits about some bolts in the second worst climbing venue in North Wales punter points on a climbing forum (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,22459.msg412424.html#msg412424)

That rotten shark stuff smelled as bad as it's description.
Perhaps someone should procure some Surströmming (http://demislw.com/blog/2014/3/9/its-a-fork-off-the-worlds-foulest-food) for the next piss-up, comes out worse in the guys comparison with Hákarl.

I must say I thoroughly enjoyed myself, although the rotting shark was an unwelcome addition to the evening; time for a similar event in Manchester or indeed in the Sheaf?
No proles, but as the conversation last year mainly centered around house prices & prep school fees (blondy you know I'm talking about you) snowbaording trips and expensive bikes I think it's fair to say the UKB crowd despite comments is a thoroughly nice middle class lot. :-[

No, just those that turned up

Indeed there were I am sure those hanging off the Beastmaker in the cellar shouting 'the workers, united, will never, be defeated'.
But it was good to see you there.
