I'm not convinced by these sorts of exercisers - the sort of "crush strength" they are describing is a dynamic activity with your hand pretty much closed up, as opposed to most climbing which involes static strength and open fingered hand positions. I don't think being good at one automatically means that you're any good at the other.

That said, they're crush strength (http://www.ironmind.com/crushed.shtml) page does mention that they train pinch strength for picking picking up planks so there maybe some benefit from using them; but  I think something like deadhangs would be more productive.

I ordered the catalog out of curiosity really and they do produce more climbing specific hand exerice tools, a good simple one they do is like a sling with five loops for fingers and thumb and this can be used with a chin up bar or a rowing machine so it would be like doing pull ups with fingers

That sounds weird, but it could be like doing comfy finger edge pullups -  are you going to get a pair and try them out?

on second thoughts tho i suppose it would only give as good a workout as a finger board....what about deadhangs though, does anyone know of a climber or can urself do deadhangs from say a beam in a roof just relying on grip strength? ive tried and its way hard!

i might get a pair, their $18 which is pretty good, ive got a chin up bar so it would be a handy addition to that, or i could tek them down the gym and use them on the rowing machine

Yes, I've seen people do this but never done it myself - I think a lot of it depends on the friction of the wood, but even on a grippy beam it's still hard.

the strong girls got twin rafters in his mams house that can be jammed with a hand and a fist.  It then depends if your rare enough to put enough pressure on the jam for it to stick on varnished pine.

Hey, i got a gripmaster some time ago that really helps with individual finger strength, seeing as you can exercise ur whole hand or just one specific finger at a time... its also good if you play a lot of guitar!
