Title: Kona Coiler frame and bits, what next?
Post by: nik at work on August 11, 2012, 09:59:34 pm
A friend has just given me a Kona Coiler frame with some bits. It has (excuse incorrect terms, I'm a know nothing):
A seat
Rear derailleur (deore XT)
Front derailleur (STX RC)
A couple of wheels with discs (specialized)
A rear cable disc brake (Acor)
Handle bars, Race Face Respond
A set of front forks described as shit but just something to attach the front wheel to (SR Suntour)

I think it needs:
Front forks
Front brake (or front and rear hydraulic brakes?)
rear cassette
crank
pedals
Umm....

After a bit of advice as what bits would be appropriate (and cheap) to get. Any suggestions/thoughts?

Stem & Seatpost. Is the headset in the frame and if so are all the bits there?
F & R Hydro brakes for sure... and mount adapters appropriate for frame and disc size
Chain
Bottom bracket
Cables for gears
Grips

Pinkbike.com and ride.io are worth a look for cheap second hand bits, Superstar components for new.

Forks, look out for rockshox models with steel stanchions - heavy but cheap and low maintenance (e.g Domain 302) although you need to ensure the travel is appropriate for the frame. - assume the frame has a rear shock present?

However... beware of being sucked into turning the frame into a money pit of different bits or worse buying the wrong bits to fit it... sometimes it's better to cut losses and look out for a bargain complete bike.... although you have a lot of the main bits there assuming you can source cheap bits for the rest

Cheers Underground.

I've got the stem and seatpost (I'm assuming these are the bits that conect seat to frame?)
Headset is all in and present and correct AFAIK, I was told it's 1 and 1/8 inch, pretty standard apparently?
Chain - good point, not going to get far without that...
Bottom Bracket - is this bit the pedals attach to?
Gears have cables and shifters (apparently a bit pants but work)
Grips - got a set of these, forgot to mention

Cheers for the forks pointers and the website suggestions, I'll get hunting...
