Title: taking bikes on the ferry(car with bike rack)
Post by: yorkshireman on May 03, 2012, 11:42:08 pm
do most ferry operators charge more for taking a bike rack with two bikes as apposed to just the car?

I think it depends if the car+rack still fits into their standard car dimensions - it'll give the dimensions when you book but for example, here's DFDS's requirements: https://www.norfolkline-ferries.co.uk/EN/Ferries_to_France/Ferry_help/vehicle_types/ (https://www.norfolkline-ferries.co.uk/EN/Ferries_to_France/Ferry_help/vehicle_types/)

So in this case a car with a rear bike-rack would be fine, but a roof-bar rack would break the 2.4m height restriction and you'd pay more.

Had no problems going over to Font in March with a high rear-mounted rack and two bikes

DFDS don't charge (as mentioned above) and they do Calais and Dunkirk

also, they accept 2.4m as being the max hight for a standard car, so anyone lucky enough to own a Chevy Astro can go on the ferry with a rear mounted bike (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,19609.msg351621.html#msg351621) rack for the normal car price

 :2thumbsup:

I have a tow bar mounted one for 3 bikes, I never mention it when booking and have never had a problem with either P&O or the shuttle.
