I used to have the fairly ancient Paintshop pro 7 on my work pc which was fine for the sort of low level slapstick photo manipulation and drawing I need. Recently I swapped machines at work and lost the program. Can anyone recommend me a free downloadable alternative, which isn’t a free trial version that only lasts a few weeks?

Before slackers jumps in there ;) have you tried GIMP? originally the Linux photoshop equivalent, but works on windows etc.. Personally its always been a bit too complex for my simple needs but might be worth a look? (but I am a complete punter at this type of thing so may be badly wrong!)

I realise its not Paintshop Pro, but if you're already familiar with the layout of Photoshop then GIMPshop (http://gimpshop.com/) is a good choice (uses a plugin to change the layout to match that of Photoshop).

I've used picasa for effects and paint.net for detailed fiddling.
This is quite far removed from pro usage but seems to work ok for my purpose.

Another vote for GIMP

GIMP is pretty powerful but may be a bit of a 'sledgehammer' if your used to PSP. Paint.net (www.getpaint.net (http://www.getpaint.net)) is probably the most accessible and pretty close to PSP.
Related is http://inkscape.org (http://inkscape.org) if your up for having a play with more advanced drawing tools, can be layered on top of photos. Been mentioned before in another thread, good free Illustrator alternative.

I've used Inkscape for all the graphics on my newer topos, works well.

Even an idiot like me can use paint.net. It's good.

Cheers all

I'm really crap at this sort of thing but paint.net is a piece of piss to use.
