Title: Cheddar conditions
Post by: i_a_coops on November 10, 2011, 01:28:23 am
Long shot I know, but any general info on the state of of seepage at the minute would be much appreciated. Particularly interested in Ginsberg Wall or Pride Evans Cave, oh and Spacehunter Wall if anyone's bothered to look!

Thanks,
Ian

Haven't been to Cheddar for a fair few weeks but it rained HARD in Bristol last night and it's still raining on and off now.

2rd hand reports it was damp earlier today.  Weather has been excellent this afternoon so will be giving it a try tomorrow.

Has the rock in the second pic come from the crag, or just washed off slopes by the water - any idea?

I couldn't see any obvious scars on High Rock.  I imagine the debris has come down from the Amphitheatre which would collected a lot of rain and funnel it down the gully and over the broken area left of Play The White Man.  There were some quite large bits on the road (TV sized even) so there may be some colateral damage to the lower left wing routes.  It was all quite impressive.

Don't suppose anyone's been to the Tombstone cave recently?  Not too hopeful given the amount of rain/general dampness we've had over the last few days but it sometimes stays dry.

Hi, I imagine it is a bit dank today. The rock on the road under High Rock is coming from work being carried out to the left of High Rock, quite spectacular when it comes down.

Does the cave take long to dry after rain? Wondering if there is any point wandering up there at the weekend for a thrash at tombstone if rubbish forecast for the rest of the week is accurate...

It does seep, so I wouldn't be too hopeful. That said, it's worst on the right hand side and all those holds are pretty good so may be dryable. I nearly did it on both my first two sessions, and both were pretty damp.

Cheers, useful to know.

The seepage seems to be a bit random. I've had two sessions on it, the first was after 3 days of dry weather and the whole bottom half was dripping. the second session was after 2 days of rain and the whole thing was dry.

I'm a bit of a noob to cheddar conditions.

It's going to be raining for the next few days, but dry on Sunday according to forecast. I'm planning on heading down on Sunday.

How likely is it that Valley of the Blind, House Burning Down or Shangri La will dry out enough in a days dry/cloudy weather?

Cheers

Whether they will be totally dry I don't know. But if they are wet then ShangriLa will be wet on the crux so it will be pointless working it. House burning down is probably more reliable, and decent chunks of the tough bit will likely be dry so it might well be worth working. I think if Valley is seeping it's usually on the bottom roof so you could probably work the crux and a lot of the rest.

If those are wet, then the steep stuff on Burmese (Pirates and Mercurian), or stuff round Speedfreak, might be worth a look. Or Ginsberg, apart from the topouts.

Anyone been to Cheddar recently? I fancy getting on Valley of the Blind tomorrow and was wondering what sort of condition i might expect it to be in!

Also, anyone got any nifty beta to help me on the 1 session RP?

Any help much appreciated.

Did you end up going today? If so, was much dry?

Sorry I missed this! Not too much was dry... Ginsberg Wall Mostly good and The Remnant ok on most routes. Most other stuff looked a bit wet! Valley of the Blind was workable, but annoyingly a little wet for me to RP.

Just bumping this so it's easier for me to find next time I want ask. In case it helps, Lion Rock was in great nick yesterday, not a wet hold on it by the time we left about 5. Remnant looked dry from a distance too.

Pig's hole is also in reasonable nick as of yesterday. Gdansk and Licking tarmac both dry, few damp spots on woody's traverse but still climbable.

Anyone go today? Thinking about getting down Thursday and wondering how she's holding up after Mondays drenching...

Quote from Tomar this evening:

Quote
Cheddar was bone dry today. Not a drop of seepage on lion, remnant, high rock, gimsberg and pride cave. A couple of wet patches at the wave.

You going down during the day on Thurs?
