Title: Parking at The Works
Post by: john horscroft on February 15, 2011, 11:44:21 am
I've been hit with a £100 parking fine for leaving the car in the wrong place in The Works car park.  OK, my own stupid fault for parking on yellow lines up against the wall, but it was gone 5.30 and you'd think they'd let things slide after work hours.  So, take care where you park.  Fuck me, £100!!!   :jaw:  :wall:

first think you should check is, if it is from sheffield council if not you might not have to pay (by which I mean they can't force you to pay).

Are these things not probably unenforceable (unless it was on the public highway)?
I seem to recall several threads where the sage advice appeared to be tell 'em to get fucked.

Don't take my word for it though, if only Sloper was still here for a definitive answer in Latin wrapped up in Tory propaganda....

The double yellows and cross hatched areas are nothing to do with the others businesses so the after 5.30pm is a red herring.

They are about emergency vehicle access and leaving the correct distance behind a parking space to allow people to get in and out. I think the length of a space including turning space is 6m hence the double yellows up against the wall. Now whether people should be able to get in and out of aspace that is less than 6m long is irrelevant but the emergency vehicle access is a no brainer.

Whether or not the tickets are enforceable ignoring the parking restrictions will make our life and your life harder so please don't ignore them. They are in force 24/7 (BTW the ticketing guy turned up at 10.10pm last night which was quite amusing)

We have a tenants meeting soon and will let people know if there are any changes

Presumably you were going to return for your car the following day then?

Sensible to be cautious cycling pissed though, phone boxes jump out at you from nowhere (I hit one after nine or ten pints went over the handlebars and cracked my head on the pavement, knocking myself out, kind people who found me called an ambulance and I had five stitches in my eyebrow ).

Much more cautious these days, and will push my bike home if I've had too much to ride it.

All duly noted Graeme and I’m quite prepared to admit I fucked up.  However, £100!  That is just taking the piss and much more likely to encourage people to tell them to shove it!  As for the emergency services red herring, as an ex-firefighter and professional tea drinker, I can assure you you could’ve got a feckin’ BUS behind my car!  However, you’re dead right about the parking restrictions, we should obey them.  However, and again I admit the fault is mine, I haven’t been aware of any of the notices warning me of the fines.  Couldn’t you make it a bit more obvious, ie, hit punters like me on the head as they walk in and say, “OY, stupid, don’t park on the double yellows!”  Only  asking.......

Don't worry John I am quite happy to call some of my customers 'stoopid' and tell them to shift their cars but I feel a bit uncomfortable saying that to customers I don't know.

Yesterday I told 3 people to move their cars and was only rude to one of them.

There are plenty of notices up - the blue & white signs all around the car park, a notice on the door and a couple more dotted around the place. PLus it was mentioned on our blog, on Facebook and it's on our website. Problem is people don't read stuff and think stuff doesn't apply to them eg lots of people have said to me they thought it only applies before 5pm despite the fact that the notices say 24/7

So how many parking spots do you have (minus the ones taken up by your staff and the ones with yellow lines) if restrictions are in effect 24/7?

maybe confusing but not contradictory.

The little triangular car park is out of bounds 24/7, it always has been.

The car parking belonging to Robert Sorby's on Little London Rd ie not on Little London Rd/Athol Rd is ok out of office hours.

From the signs up around the Works

There is a new parking regime for Centenary Business Park, with tickets being issued if you park in certain spaces. If you park in bays 29-42 or bay 55 you will be issued with a ticket – please read the warning signs that are around the car park.

Also do not park on the double yellow lines or in the cross hatched area or you will be ticketed.

Please, please park considerately and do not obstruct marked doorways.  During very busy periods it may be difficult (if not impossible!) to find a space in the car park. However, alternative car parking is available in the following places…

The car park next to the bridge.

Robert Sorby Tools opposite Centenary Business Park are happy for our customers to use their car parking spaces out of work hours (weekends & weekday evenings) - this does not apply to the small triangular car park.

Considerate road-side parking is available on Little London Road and the surrounding area.

It's only not contradictory because you've changed the parking info page since I posted.  ::)

NOW its clear that you can't park there, but before it said in one paragraph that you could't park there at all, but further down the page it said that its was OK out of normal hours. Glad that its been chanced to its clear.

As a community service the Works should provide a screwdriver so you can remove your plates if you have to park in its car park?  Or your bike proficiency test sticker or whatever smart-arses like Slackers have.

Who actually issues the tickets? Is it the council or a private company?

I'd be surprised if it was the council firstly because of the £100 charge and secondly because someone was issuing tickets at 10pm.

It should be noted that it is only the driver, and not the owner, who will be liable for the
privately issued parking ticket. The reason being that, under contract law, the contract is
formed between the driver (not the owner) and the private company concerned. Further, in
such a situation, there is no legal obligation on the owner to name or identify the driver.

I think actually the advice from pepipoo (the forums for this kind of thing) is to just completely ignore it and not enter into any correspondence with them.

The only time you need to worry is when the term "parking charge notice" is changed into "alleged debt" as thats what they have to call it to take matters further. They're still at our complex and are actively ticketing people who are parked in spaces that they own. Its not VCS at the works is it?

Having said the above; it would be nice if people would park with a little more forethought at the Works rather than the "its raining so I'll tag my car onto the others and everyone else can just deal with it" mentality .

Parking does seem to becoming a bit of a nightmare down there.

GraemeA, whilst you're on here you might appreciate a little feedback. On Friday the amount of kiddies running around was pretty scary. It must be very difficult to keep them in check, but the last thing you guys need is a serious incident (and i don't want the guilt on my shoulders either by falling off, which we all do at times, and injuring me/a kid).

Anyhow - on a positive note the comp wall is coming on great  ;D

Indeed - I'm now a much more occasional visitor and have really noticed this every time I go back now. Aware there's a limit to what can be done but more than once I've been just about to slap / dyno for a hold and a kid has wandered straight underneath me, no obvious adult supervising them...

The people I know/climb with seem to be of the same mind.

No one can say the works don't do a great job, we are really very lucky to have a facility like this in Sheff. Add in the quality and regularity of setting it must come accross as extremely selfish to post negative comments. However, the nature of the problem, or rather my problem, is that it spoils the experience and puts me off going, especially of an evening.

I'd like to offer some sort of solution, maybe stricter supervision by parents (probably tried already), permanent staff member in the kiddies area or do what every other kiddies play area has and put a fence round it - major structural/financial implications aside of course!

Anyhow, keep up the good work!

When it's really busy it's not just kids wandering about underneath people, I've had more problems with teenagers / adults not paying attention to what's going on above them. Presumably this is a problem at any wall with that type of design / areas. I don't go when it's really busy.

;D Do you think thats a visual or chemical effect?

Sod the free tea, can I have a free bike to ride to the Works?

On a more serious note, the kids running around playing hide and seek were a fuckin pain last night to the point where John from the Clinic had to tell one of them to come out from hiding under his fold out table.......

Indeed. When he was telling him about dishing out beatings to unruly cunts in the club and Louis was getting quite uncomfortable. Quality.

If kids are causing problems just bob over to the desk and tell the members of staff on the desk and we'll be happy to sort it, just if it's busy its hard for us to pick up on it. Help us and we can help you  :)

Do you recon he used to pull the same trick with the marathons? park up a transit 200mm from the Mall......

Basically it's getting very busy down The Works, seriously guys can you expand next door, depressingly packed last night, what we need is some good weather and let the crags take the strain.

Quite put out that Graeme doesn't wear a uniform when directing traffic in the car park.

Don'y worry jon we are expanding, in a couple of weeks there will be something like an extra 150sqm compared with what was available last night

I was wearing a uniform last night: Cypher pants, Rab duvet and beanie  ;)

According to  a marathon runner  that used to go  out with my sister , yes that's exactly what he did ...... Not quite as close as 200 mm though  :P

On a slightly more serious note some twats tried to break into my mates car parked in Sorby's tools (or whatever it's called) on friday night. Absolute amateurs though, they had tried to kick the windscreen in. No vandalism on any other cars and his wing-mirrors etc. were intact so as far as we can tell was just a shitty attempted robbery.

There was a satnav mount on the windscreen so watch your stuff...

Perhaps you need glasses like Fatdoc?

ahem,

20:20 vision actuuuallly.

just a bit worried that I need a CT of my brain  :'(

or just stop working 60 hours a week  ::)

as for parking, after hrs you can use that layby opposite or  on the side street, which is all of 20m further to walk

I have to drive past there about 5 times a week in the evening ( kids activities etc.. ) and might I say that the twats that park in the apex of the bend 3 m from the works entrance

deserve
- their lack of wing mirrors
- at least £100 fine.

The road than becomes one vehicle only, on a blind bend & no one in the works can see to get out!!

Back to the op..
MrsTT had an unwanted parking 'notice' from Excel parking at the weekend. Wrongly booked for being in a pay and display out of chargeable hours. Thanks to he posts earlier she's now going to just ignore it. Apparently it's all a front from these companies, you should never pay or respond. Even if they decide to take you to court, it's a small claims CIVIL court where at worst case (ie it's never even got this far) you may have to pay the orig charge and a £30 court fee. That's it. No solicitors or bailiffs charges etc. Bunch of wankers... Don't pay. Loads of posts on moneysavingexpert forum about this.

It's like most of these things. They rely on fear and ignorance. It's amazing how many people will panic and pay up when in receipt of an official looking letter instead of looking into it first.

The ACS Law (http://www.itproportal.com/2011/02/15/acs-law-targetted-innocent-users-for-illegal-downloading/) cases being a prime example.
