-
In no particular order
Delphic - Acolyte
LCD Sound System - This is Happening
Broken Bells - Broken Bells (cheers FD)
Caribou - Swim
Sparklehorse / Dangermouse - Long Dark Night.....
Fyffe Dangerfield - Fly Yellow Moon (cheesy I know)

The Drums - The Drums
Four Tet - There is love....
-
Are we the only people who still listen to albums?
-
No, I've bought loads recently but I'm not sure what were 2010 releases.
John Grant's Queen of Denmark is great though.
Quite a vintage year for gigs/sets though.
1. Flaming Lips, Green Man Festival: joyous
2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Manchester: huge
3. Wilco, End of the Road: well, d'uh
4. Dinosaur Jr, Liverpool: weeks and weeks of tinnitus.
5. Phospherescent, End of the Road. Come to think of it, I think Phospherescent's Here's to Taking it Easy was 2010.
-
I got a lot of music this year, but none of it came out this year!
Actually I got at least two:
The new Bring Me the Horizon one (Sheffield teenybop Thrashcore): http://open.spotify.com/album/6PlQacVc09348OiGAHoEkt (http://open.spotify.com/album/6PlQacVc09348OiGAHoEkt)
The Kvelertak one (Norwegian thrashy hardcore): http://open.spotify.com/album/08d7MnYYp9OEsQ8GcnMHOn (http://open.spotify.com/album/08d7MnYYp9OEsQ8GcnMHOn)
oh and the new Maiden one, (but that's not very good) http://open.spotify.com/album/3CE0SB7URLI49lxJcykXUi (http://open.spotify.com/album/3CE0SB7URLI49lxJcykXUi)
-
I'm a cheapskate and only buy old, generally second-hand albums.
-
Technically a reissue I suppose but I don't care.
1960/2010- Africa 50 years of music, 50 ans d'indépenances, 18cd box-set.
Gigs wise- Dinosaur jr, were tops as were Do, Make, Say, Think.
and 2011 starts off with Godspeed you black emperor, next week!
Didn't get Queen of Denmark though...
-
Didn't get Queen of Denmark though...
As in didn't buy it or didn't 'get it' - latter I'm guessing. He was very good live at the Green Man too.
You're in for a treat next week - where are they playing? Manchester was epic - 2 and a half hours, seven songs!
Biggest disappointment was Midlake Courage of Others: dreary, dreary, dreary!
-
Seeing them in Paris in one of the venues with the best sound, last time I went there I saw a double bill of Throbbing gristle and Pan sonic which was awesome.
Quite enjoyed the Midlake album. Think I'll give John Grant another go this evening.
-
When/ where are Godspeed you black emperor on?
-
I saw them early December with Falling Down - I think the UK leg of the tour has finished.
-
BALLS! I was probably away anyway.
-
One highlight was finding The Glitch Mob - Drink The Sea :great:
:agree: An awesome album!
I stumbled onto it after watching the following
Storm Freerun - Volume 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dHy9W9LpvlQ#ws)

yeah... that's how I got it too!!!
loads of free download stuff, mixes etc on their website (http://website)

Bring Me the Horizon one (Sheffield teenybop Thrashcore)
can't seem to get excited about these guys
granted they make a good noise but I just find myself thinking about going and listening to some old In Flames....
-
1. Siren - Broken Silence
2. Top Cat - Champion Deejay
3. Blade - Moments That Change Us
4. Black Sun Empire - Lights And Wires
5. Break - Resistance
That is all.
-
....but I just find myself thinking about going and listening to some old In Flames....
What would you recommend as the best albums to get into In Flames, sound like they may be my cup o tea
-
4. Black Sun Empire - Lights And Wires
Wondered if you'd clocked this. Nice.
-
Well, before I start with this year's album I'm going to mention an album from a band I only just found out about recently. The band is The Notwist and the Album, from 2003 but re-released this year is Neon Golden. I think this may turn out to be my all-time favourite album!
So, back to 2010:
1. LCD Soundsystem, This is Happening
2. Shady Bard, Trials
3. Yeaseyer, Odd Blood
4. The XX, The XX (Sorry, but it's great)
5. Emeralds, Does it look like I'm here?
6. Deftones, Diamond Eyes
7. The Hundred in the Hands, Self Titled.
8. Lower Dens, Twin-Hand Movement
9. Midlake, The Courage of others
10. Them Crooked Vultures, Self Titled. (Although may technically be 2009, but I got it in 2010
Make of that what you will...
Biggest disappointment was Midlake Courage of Others: dreary, dreary, dreary!
Why were they such a disappointment? I hadn't heard of them before, but quite like the album. Played it to a mate at work and she thought it's was depressingly dull...maybe I like depressing music??
-
4. Black Sun Empire - Lights And Wires
Wondered if you'd clocked this. Nice.
It is indeed. Generally a kinda mediocre year but the late triple of Siren / BSE / Break saved it. I was initially unsure about BSE's dnb / dubstep alternation but the dubstep is so strong it works, some of the best tracks in fact.
-
Midlake's previous album, The Trials of Van Occupanther, was sublime. Courage' was a big disappointment after that.
-
Good thread, keep them coming
Know there are some electronica fans on here somewhere so my single (from 2008, but discovered in 2010) is Trente Moller - Take Me Into Your Skin (on downtempo - minimal electronica)
-

The dubstep is fantastic, but I had to rearrange it so it isn't alternated - I just don't like the change in pace! Often I just want to listen to the dubstep or the drum and bass on the album, but never both. You heard the sampler tracks?
Black Sun Empire - Driving Insane ( Counterstrike remix) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eAoW3Vb3WxY&feature=related#)
-
In no particular order:
The Drums - The Drums
Surfer Blood - Astro Coast
Sweetapple - Love & Desperation (Dinosaur Jr fuzzy goodness)
Iron Maiden - The Final Frontier (yeah, I know..Cheesy but great)
Kele - The Boxer
Kanye - M B D T F
Children Collide - The theory of everything (Oz band - Check out 'Jellylegs' for a taste)
Massive Attack - Heligoland
Alkaline Trio - This addiction
-
....but I just find myself thinking about going and listening to some old In Flames....

Come Clarity if you like it a bit new school
i.e.
IN FLAMES - Take This Life (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O1FkbvGl-IU#)
Clayman if you like it a bit older school
i.e.In Flames - Pinball Map (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wCvq8VN9owY&feature=related#)
The albums inbetween - Coundtrack to your escape and Reroute to Remain (the album that got me into them) are also good
the stuff after come clarity, whilst good, seemed to be treading old ground to me...
-
Know there are some electronica fans on here somewhere so my single (from 2008, but discovered in 2010) is Trente Moller - Take Me Into Your Skin (on downtempo - minimal electronica)
Bollocks forgot about that. Four Tet just dropped out of top 10, replaced with Trente Moller - Into The Great Wide Yonder.
-
Agnes Obel - Philharmonics
The National - High Violet
Danger Mouse and Sparklehorse
ASS - Salt Marsh
I also listened to the Band of Horses album a lot, but it's nowhere near as good as the two albums before it.
-
Top albums for me have been.
High Violet - The National
The Wild Hunt - Tallest Man On Earth
Swim - Caribou
I Speak Because I Can - Laura Marling
Also discovered Furry Lewis this year for all those early delta blues fans. Gritty.
Furry Lewis - When I lay my burden down (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CCqbKdnHZTs#)
-
my favourite has been an oldie
The Dwarves Must Die by the dwarves, because it's both good and shit (in a good way) in equal measures
Have also just downloaded Trial and Terror by Battle of the War Machines, streamable here http://battleofthewarmachines.bandcamp.com/album/trial-and-terror (http://battleofthewarmachines.bandcamp.com/album/trial-and-terror) check it out if your into your noisy guitar shizzle. I used to be in a band with their drummer and am well impressed by the quality/variety of songs/ production value on their album
-
I also listened to the Band of Horses album a lot, but it's nowhere near as good as the two albums before it.
Sir, you do intrigue me. I shall depart forthwith, acquire said recordings, listen and opine.
-
Thanks for the Godspeed ticket Andy, a real shame I had to leave early to catch a train.
I've not really been ferreting out new music this year but have been happy mining the archives and enjoying familiar sounds from the past. Stuff that's caught my ear and stood up to repeated listening this year include:
Bob Mould - Life and Times (technically 2009 but it was late in the year)
Caribou - Swim
Four Tet - There is love in you
Darkstar - North
Several individual tracks off the Magnetic Man album
I'll be checking out some of the recomendations on this thread - thanks.
-
Dan le Sac vs Scroobius Pip - The Logic of Chance (quality through and through)
Massive Attack - Heligoland (it's like Mezzanine all over again)
Plan B - The Defamation of Strickland Banks (music I never thought I'd like)
Brain too flu adled to think/remember anything else that I bought.
-
Like everyone, Caribou
Massive attack - Heligoland
Laura marling (though I think my crush on her may sway this a bit)
Jim jones revue - burning your house down (suprised this hasn't been mentioned yet)
Mostly I've listened to Flaming lips for the same reasons as mr popp - AMAZING set at greenman.
-
Check out track one on the avovementioned Dangermouse and Sparklehorse Album, I think it's one of the finest Flaming Lips songs ever (yes that's fighting talk)
-
I can't believe it. I've been out of the loop regarding downtempo indie/whatever you wanna call it for a while. I used to be a big Sparklehorse fan, so when checking out links to the Dangermouse and Sparklehorse album, I was totally gutted to read that Mark Linkous is dead. To then find out that Vic Chestnutt was also dead, who has also produced some brilliant music, well it's ruined my day. Along with the late, lamented Elliott Smith, that's 3 of my all time favourite musicians off to the great gig in the sky. RIP guys. :(
-
I thought your username was "damn" then...
Caribou album is brilliant. The remix album is also great! Sun is probably my favourite track. Here's a remix my mate did:
Caribou - Sun (Midland Re-Edit) - Official (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kC1wTLHLjik#)
-
2. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, Manchester: huge
What's this? I was at the gig (assuming it was the one about a month ago) but no idea of a release of that name - must be something other than a Constellation release...
Edit: oh arse I really should read the full post first - was an awesome gig - good to see them back on the road for the first time in the best part of a decade.
-
Massive Attack - Heligoland - (it's like Mezzanine all over again)
Brain too flu adled to think/remember anything else that I bought.
Just put Heliogoland on for the first time in ages to see if this is really possible but given that Mezzanine would be one of the first three choices for my Desert Island CD's I am slightly sceptical at the minute.
-

I agree, but Heligoland is still awesome. Mezzanine is usually my first choice for best recording ever made ever. Ever. When asked that question, which happens all the time obviously...
-
Its an easy choice for me... Mumford and Sons.
GUTTED that I missed them at Glasto, got their gig on vid and its awesome.
I hope their playing again this year.
-
ASS - Salt Marsh
Feck, That went under my radar. He's frickin ace having seen him a few times years ago. Thanks for posting that! :great:
-
Also enjoyed The Besnard Lakes, The Besnard Lakes are the Roaring Night
-
I'd like to add Sufjan Stevens - The Age of Adz and Stereolab - Not Music they are the best albums I purchased last year (but I only picked up two albums last year)
-
If you're into bluesy stuff Joe Bonamassa's Black Rock was very good I thought
-
My favourite CD of last year was Dave Seaman Global Underground 39 Lithuania. Flawless progressive house of the highest calibre. Sublime in every aspect.
-
Can't believe nobody's said Mount Kimbie:
Mount Kimbie - Carbonated (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I4JdN6gwotc#ws)
-
I think it actually came out late 2009, but I really got into Bitte Orca by The Dirty Projectors.
A truly mind blowing album.
Dirty Projectors - Temecula Sunrise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qtXtgHGrL9E#)
Dirty Projectors - Stillness Is The Move (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YMPF6lpM0XM&feature=fvw#ws)
On a slightly more up to date tip: a mate of mine talked me into going to see The Walkmen in Manchester about a week ago. I'd not really come across them before, but did a crash listening course in the month before the night and it clicked. Anyway, it turned out to be one of the best gigs I've ever been too. Amazing stuff.
This is a good place to start if you're not familiar, although a lot of their other stuff is more mellow:
The Walkmen - The Rat + lyrics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ipehdaDw7v4&feature=related#)
-
Great thread- getting some great new music out of it. Lots of stuff people are mentioning are bands that come up as suggested artists in Spotify based on what I normally listen to, I should pay more attention to them...
My top albums of 2010....
The National - High Violet
Kanye - My Dark Twisted Beautiful Fantasy
These New Puritans - Hidden
Foals - Total Life Forever
Probably some more...
-
Didn't seem a vintage year, but Maiden's Final Frontier was full of prog-metal goodness
-
Agnes Obel - Philharmonics
Wadded. This album is absolutely top.
In case you are interested, other artists worth checking out on this vein (folky female singer/songwriters). Although i'm sure you have some across many (all) of them before.
Cat Power
Laura Marling
Lisa Hannigan
Feist
Joanna Newsom
I'm in love with them all! :-[
-

don't fancy yours much

I never thought I'd get into 2011 wondering what were my favourite albums of 2010, especially having to wonder what I'd listened to in 2010, but it was a quiet year for new music, most of it being consumed with work and changing work and all that. And the fact that about 90% of my listening is proper funk, 0.5% is Through the Windowpane, by Guillemots, and the rest is Hip Hop and Deep House and RA podcasts off itunes.
So for new albums in 2010, the one that knocked my spots off was 'Fly Yellow Moon' by Fyfe Dangerfield, he being the man behind my beloved Guillemots....
Love it.
