Title: What music to play?
Post by: youngy on July 29, 2010, 10:08:54 am
Been working at a wall for a while now and managed to get some choice in the music that gets played.
Unfortunately many people aren't fans of dubstep so people always complain about it. haha.

Im thinkin meet somewhere in the middle with some like chilled minimal/ techno/ house?

Whats the general concensous that can keep people happy and still be playing some decent beats so i dont go crazy having to listen to Five and Jonny Cash all day?

P.S any links to decent long mixes to download would be a great help.

I think the music has seen a huge improvement since you started on counter. It's ok on Thursday too when Ian is in but outside of this it is woefully bad!

Maybe some sets off beyondjazz.net too la... I had some good ones saved somewhere. I tihnk they would placate those not keen on heavy dubstep.

FYI just tried to download  the mr scruff mp3  several times from work and home, ninjatunes doesnt appear to report the filesize when downloading so when the connectivity lapses which is appears to do the downloads complete with a unresumeable incomplete file.

Installed download them all on firefox and it has brought the file down.  your looking at a file which reports as 107.42M

Cheers
Tim

Search soundcloud or google for "house podcast", "techno podcast", etc. There's gazzillions of mixes to download for free out there.

Not at all, server is sat on Manchester Uni (where I haven't worked for five years) so bandwidth isn't an issue.

Another good source of mixes is The Mixing Bowl (http://www.themixingbowl.org), all Essential Mixes, and tons of other radio shows and readers mixes available for download (check the Mix of the Week for fresh suggestions).

Little point in trying to find a particular style to play out at the wall as you can please some of the people some of the time...blah, blah, blah.

The Aphex Twin mix on there is F**kin' ace. Can't wait for the Hallucinogen set  to finish downloading (only 50 mins remaining!!)

Tim  - I didn't realise as I downloaded with Firefox. It's a fine mix though despite a few dips in the levels early on.

It worked for the works. Very good background / syke w/out being overbearing music. Dubstep would be good too tho.

I'm afraid it's quite hard to persuade Ben F to come the wall these days...

  nice.

Mr Donnelly came up with a golden nugget lately with his discovery of the Simply Electronica net station. Never any talking and plays 24/7, 365.

http://www.simply-electronica.de/%5B_start_%5D.html (http://www.simply-electronica.de/%5B_start_%5D.html)   is the site address.

Click 'Audiostream' and open the itunes stream or utilise whichever other application the wall is running now.

I put a good few gig of techno on there back when I was working but I daresay that's as good as flushed into the Mersey now.
Glad to see you asking this vital question lad!

Mark, I forgot to mention during annual appearance the other week.. if you're using itunes, subscribe to the Freude am Tanzen, Get Physical, Monopod (Slam's cast), Mobilee, Resident Advisor and Beyond Jazz podcasts. All available by itunes podcast search and extremely minimal talking on them (non on most).

Also, can I request a blanket volume increase on the speakers? Pure treble is annoying. I think this is down to the 'vintage' speakers but possibly not. I know you wouldn't want to annoy the wall occupants but in the all vs nothing battle, for a jumped up activity like climbing, I'd have to side with all.

Haha thats as loud as the speakers go mate, well maybe abit louder but then all they do is crackle with the shear amounts of dust/ chalk in them haha
 :boohoo:
