Title: Freestanding Folding portable pull up bar/dip station AKA HOTGYM
Post by: JamesD on July 15, 2010, 01:31:26 pm
Anyone bought/own one of these, know anyone that has one?

They look pretty decent, and a potential solution to my lack of having anywhere to mount shit inside the house I live in:

Whadda ya reckon?

the base doesn't look very wide. I know using the roman chinup at greens if I try a one-armer the thing starts to tip. You're a big bigger than me.

I think I may be able to get past that using some clip on weights I have for light stands, I think seeing as I am not going to be doing one arm pull-ups anytime soon it's not a major thing, I can just about hang from one arm at the moment lol.
Maybe i'll call the guy see what he says..

any kind of kipping and it'll rock... I suggest you get like malc and carve your own out of wood.

See thread elsewhere on here by Jasper about Powerbars, will one of them not do instead?  I'd recommend one.

Yeah, real problem is though, is the house I live in (which is rented), is built about as sturdily as a cardboard box, so none of the doorways seem strong enough to cope with my weight, about 16 stone 10lbs at the moment (fat bastard I know).
So my two options are, drill something into the brickwork outside, or find/build something freestanding I can use inside.

They would have to be really shit door frames not to hold your weight.  The supports on the Powerbar sit well to the side of the door so virtually all the load is straight down onto the jambs (vertical part of the frame).  In other words it aint like pulling straight down in the middle of the lintel.  That's my 2p of help, I'll leave you to sort yourself out now, good luck.

You could drill through on the "feet" and bolt to the floor...
but otherwise I'd agree looks very likely to wobble leading to ouchies

You could stablise the base with some barbell plates if you have them. Remember the commerical gym i used to go to did this even though its freestanding pullup bars were very sturdy looking.

Cheers

My suggestion - get one of those pull up bars from Argos
(http://www.argos.co.uk/wcsstore/argos/images/3003341A61UC55681X.jpg)
screw the holding discs into the door frame as normal, unscrew the bar to fit as normal, but stop when the door frame starts to bend out. Then use two vertical lengths of wood to support the ends of the bar (floor to bar length) - take the wood and bar away when you don't need them.

the door frame will keep it all stable while the wood props take a lot of the weight.

Only trouble is, at 6'4" or so and massive, you now wont be able to get through the doorway.  :P

Can you make sure you have a D3 hired and setup to record your first session on the Hotgym and post the resulting video here for everyones amusement reference on how to use these.
