Title: Pembroke & Northumberland - Beaches, Pubs & Van doss spots?
Post by: RichK on April 20, 2010, 09:57:59 am
Last weeks Cheddar beta proved to be  :great:

So with UKB being the font of wisdom & wile more knowledge appreciated on the following.

Off to Pembers or Northumberland on Thursday depending on best weather :bounce:
Climbing is catered for in both areas....so I'm happy.
Beaches as well, so she's happy. However, any knowledge on really outstanding beaches in either area would make her even happier so recommendations please?

Pubs and Van doss spots of note welcomed as well.

Would second Bamburgh, have seen people parking there vans along here (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=The+Wynding&sll=55.616195,-1.716828&sspn=0.019001,0.037079&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=The+Wynding,+Bamburgh,+Northumberland+NE69,+United+Kingdom&ll=55.616704,-1.731591&spn=0.019001,0.037079&t=h&z=15).  The beach that is to the North of the golf club is one of the best IMO, super quiet.  Pub wise I would try and check out The Ship Inn (http://www.shipinnnewton.co.uk/) in Newton Cove, they have their own microbrewery, are next to another nice beach and the food is meant to be good, Lobster caught from the bay in front etc. though I have never actually eaten there.

Pembroke wise I have seen a lot of vans parked in the car park in Bosherston  (http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=bosherston&sll=52.951698,-1.176854&sspn=0.010136,0.018539&ie=UTF8&hq=&hnear=Bosherston,+Pembroke,+United+Kingdom&ll=51.615124,-4.938934&spn=0.001312,0.002317&t=h&z=19&layer=c&cbll=51.61501,-4.939228&panoid=37pHWnR7sHf0R6U0Z6s2vA&cbp=12,57.51,,0,5) which has some lovely clean National Trust toilets, the same ones you ahve to use if camping in the Vicar's Field.  You are also close to the St. Govans Inn which is not too bad.

Van doss spots in Pembroke: Broadhaven Car park (NT), the St. Govans Car park or Freshwater West Beach car park are all good options.  You can doss in the one in Bosherston by the lilly ponds (NT), but the warden may well wake you early and ask you to move on, this may also be the case at Broadhaven.  The St Govans is a great pub, worth booking a table the day before if you plan to eat in there and its busy, if you book it for a late food time then you get to remain at it as long as you want after eating too.

Both Broadhaven and Freshwater West are lovely big beaches too, and the Lilly ponds a nice way of walking to Broadhaven from Bosherston.

Avoid the Lindisfarne Inn for food, staff are terrible and food is at best mediocre.

Have eaten at the hotel in Belford before and the food was pretty good.

Ditto
The ship inn near craster (you can walk along Baburgh beach to get there, parking at the golf club). It has its own Micro Brewery as featured on Oz. and Jame drink Britain. I'd get a Crab Stottie.

If you decide to park up on The Wynding (Bamburgh), the first parking spot (on your right) has a sign saying that overnight parking is not allowed. Drive a bit further and there are parking spots with no such signs (and are further from the houses).

Even nicer, if a bit longer, if you are after a walk is to start from Craster, walk past Dunstanburgh Castle, then along the beach.  The castle is pretty cool, one of the few that has not been renovated and so is falling down, though if you pay or are a NT member they let you go up some of the towers.  On one side of it you can see the remnants of some man made lakes the builder had made just so the castle would look more impressive from a distance as you would see the reflection in the lakes, that is a pretty serious water feature!
