Title: New topo making software and lots of free topos
Post by: Annabee on March 07, 2010, 04:16:51 pm
Check out: http://27crags.com (http://27crags.com)

There you can find many bouldering areas with maps and topos. You can easily add your own topos there by uploading a photo and then drawing the routes on the website.

The most famous bouldering topos on 27crags are:

Lofoten: http://27crags.com/areas/lofoten (http://27crags.com/areas/lofoten)
Rocklands: http://27crags.com/areas/rocklands (http://27crags.com/areas/rocklands)

I use this SW and find it easier to use than some other similar tools: much faster, generally easy to use. The developers are very fast to respond to queries and seem to be nice folk ;) ;) ciao Peter

Here are some examples of the kind of topos you can make on 27crags.com:

I had a good look on 27crags and was very impressed with it! I'll definitely use it for some print outs that will go well with the current guides available as the photos are much clearer with the 'beta' lines of where problems start and finish.

Well done

These sort of sites may be of assistance with researching poorly documented areas and as an overview for researching a trip, but surely the system falls down (as a proper guide/topo site) due to its unregulated/unmoderated functionality. Also, from what I can tell, few people put much effort into the info they apply to the site, so while you may get a few useful/well added pieces of info you can spend along time perusing pages which turn out to be fairly useless.

An interesting concept, but one that needs building upon in my view.

As someone who bolts routes, helps to write guidebooks and gets paid for translating them, I am well aware of the harm that "free" topos can do. Both my wife and I worked for years in SW development and we are against free topos, free downloads etc. However, I use 27crags as a repository for new route info for routes/boulders that we've developed, simply because it is a useful "in advance" way of divulging info before a regular guidebook is developed. All the people who have such sites, whether or not they get advertising income, find sooner or later that they have to provide info on the area guidebooks, if for no other reason than you need proper maps and descriptions to find boulders and crags. As Richie said, 27crags is one of the better sites of its type. ciao Peter
