First off, space is pretty limited so is it worth building an 8x4 woodie?
And would something like this be strong enough?
Would appreciate any suggestions too!

I know someone who had something similar. He was happy with it, and trained on it a lot. His was a lot steeper though - if you only have 8' of height, you will get more out of it if you make it more overhanging. My friend started his at 45 deg., then decided to change it to about 60 deg, with one large rung as his only foothold.

It must take some serious dedication to train on something that small. My 10 x 8 woody gets a little tedious after a while. Still, it beats paying £7.50 every time.

It looks like a mini varian board. Having nearly being crushed to death by said board as Ned et al. decided that I could support it while they mucked round with something I can safely say that your smaller board is likely to be strong enough. This thing weighed a tonne.
It the same old same old on small boards, the limiting factor in the equation is going to be psych, you probably think you'll use it loads but even with the best will in the world its hard going.

I have a pre drilled and T nutted 8 x 4 board available if you live near Sheffield.

will it damage the floor if you put it upstairs in your bedroom? parents are worried non-climbers!

Alright, I was just looking for somewhere to post pictures of my woody :whistle: and stumbled across this,
we have a freestanding board in our basement but it is also propped up by both the walls in the basement.

there is a 45 steel bracket i picked up from a hardware shop joining the two. note this was originally mounted on ropes outside and these have been used as a back up attached to the joists.

I'd say it definitely needs to be a wider than 4.
You'll find that the struts are quite intrusive and as such the climbing will be quite confined to the center - might be ok as a campus type thing though.

Thanks for the replies guys, decided it's probably not worth it in the end given how small it would be. Money would be better spent on wall fees I think.
And thanks rocketman and andy b, but I'm a few hours away from Sheffield anyway.
