I'm after a small, memory card camcorder to mainly use for family stuff, i'll also use it for a bit of climbing.
It need to be sub £100 and preferably do 720. I also want it to hold it like a camcorder and not like a mobile phone. something like the toshiba camileo h20 or p30 but slightly cheaper and preferably be able to but it on a tripod.
any suggestions?
-
no one got or use anything like this then?
-
its tough criteria to fill for the budget.
-
There's a few about, but I can't advise you on them I'm afraid.
Andy reason you want SD rather than HDD?
-
Don't HDD tend towards slightly bulkier than SD?
Vaguely looking for something similar at the moment and I think it's a tall order Jim. Cheap, quality, small - choose any two.
-
I think your price will be the sticking point, unless you go with 2nd hand.
You'll probably be looking at something like the Aiptek AHD200 or similar, but is that not a shape you'd want?
-
I think HDD is more expensive and bulkier. The toshiba's are only just over £100

I remember something on this on the Gadget show before Xmas... but cant remember the reccomendation (was only 1/2 watching) but might be worth a trawl on their website - there was one clear winner IIRC.. which was about £100-120 (probably cheaper now)

Were they not testing waterproof camcorders? Or was that not the show you were talking about?

I've got a slightly higher-up model than this. fit's your requirements I think.
mine works well enough for me to recommend this, but there's very little info out there on how well it works/reviews etc

I think that might have been another show - the episodes just seem to blur... at least the re-occuring nightmares featuring the short bald guy have stopped ;)
-
That's not a guy, it's Gail Porter :)
-
you bought one of these yet Jim?
Just noticed this on ebuyer:
http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164710 (http://www.ebuyer.com/product/164710)
-
no but that looks pretty good. cheers
-
ordered that very one,
I did order the toshiba one but they were out of stock and refunded me. glad they did really cos the image quality got slated in the reviews
the sanyo gets very good reviews however
cheers Paul
-
Which Sanyo reviews you looking at Jim, tempted by the Waterproof HD ones, but reviews are mixed.

no problem, can you let me know what you think of it when you've had time to try it out?
-
just general reviews from sites like amazon etc...
The overall reviews for the sanyo were far better than the toshiba
Paul - Being a tight-arse I've got it on free delivery so won't get it till next friday.
I don't know why they do this, you would of thought they would want to get rid asap, ie make room in their warehouse.

They must know my steez.
Just ordered another dozen D3x's. Can't get enough of them.
-
But the D3x is aimed at studio photography, I'd have thought you'd have been more a D3s (http://www.reghardware.co.uk/2010/03/12/review_camera_nikon_d3s_dslr/) man cofe?
-
Already got a stack of them too. You can never have too many heavy, expensive cameras when you can only really hold one to take a photo. But fuck it. As money's no object, I might buy a few more to bandy around.
-
does it have a tripod mount? The sanyo not the D3S/X
-
apparently so

Quite handy to have a few. Never know when you will need a cheatstone, or to bash a tentpeg in.
-
i'm after a decent camrecorder, sub £200, preferably HD and SD. Any ideas anyone?
-
Here, let me google that for you (http://tinyurl.com/yaofou3).
(Sorry, couldn't resist the obvious opportunity to use lmgtfy ).
-
mine is being delivered today
-
I'd be interested to hear what it's like Jim. The sensor size seems impressively big for such a cheapy.
-
Having had a quick play with this, I'm reall impressed at what you get for your money.
Its a great size and really easy to use. I haven't had time to look at any footage back on a big screen yet so can't comment on the quality.
Only 2 negative points that have struck me so far is that when taking still images it takes ages to take the picture and the battery is tiny (it does need to be tho) although I can't comment on how long it will last because I haven't had it long enough although I suspect an 8gig card which I think can take about 2 hours of footage will be full before the battery runs out. I will probably buy a second battery at some point.
First impressions are very good
-
I've yet to come across a mid / low price camcorder that takes decent still images. Might flex the plastic now i got a payrise!
-
I'm not fussed about the stills either. If it shoots 'decent' HD video for hundred quid then I'm interested. Jim?
-
its only 720 you know at 30 fps. you can go to 60fps but you have to switch to sd.
give us a few days to get some footage, inside & outside, and i'll post my results up
-
1080 vpc s1 imminent (http://www.cliftoncameras.co.uk/Sanyo_Xacti_VPC_CS1_Video_Camera)
£250 tho
-
does it have a tripod mount? The sanyo not the D3S/X
definitely yes
-
I notice that Aldi have a 720p camera for fuck all (http://www.aldi.co.uk/uk/html/offers/special_buys2_12463.htm)
ooops, my mistake, that was last year

They still had them in my local Aldi this weekend...

Have you got some footage yet Jim?
I'd be interested to see the results.
-
going to put together some cave footage in the next day or 2.
I'm impressed, for the money I think its excellent. I'll put a single clip up on vimeo soon actually
-
sample
Dylan failing to link lou ferrino in the mighty cave (http://vimeo.com/10577766)
click to go through to vimeo to watch it in HD (ie native resolution)
-
punter
-
make sure you click to go to vimeo site to watch it in HD, having just watched them both, the sd version displayed above is much poorer than the original on vimeo

Nice on Jim.
Looks good although the colours look a little washed out (particularly the reds?) and foley looks like he hasn't been out of the cave for years (whiter that white?).
-
I suspect that is 99% due to the lighting. I'm impressed.
-
yes its the lighting in the cave.
can't upload another HD vid till next week.
the colours are all good in normal conditions
-
I'm impressed.
Hopefully not by Dylans climbing ;D
-
He's finally seen the light about the cave
-
that looks like pretty good quality for 100 gold coins.
-
That's a great picture for the price. The colours can probably be sorted out easily by colour correcting and tweaking brightness/contrast and saturation. Better that the reds are washed instead of the usual budget camera thing of over saturating reds to make skin tones look warmer.
I think you should get another one, Jim, and start shooting in 3D. Then you can justify buying a 3D monitor.
-
Jim, get a couple dozen of them set up on a huge curved rig and shoot some concept bullet-time shit. Dense could black up and be lawrence fishbourne. Take the red pill Jim.
-
short of painting the cave green and doing some smart key trickery, the video adjusts fine to summat like this in Vegas
(http://img237.imageshack.us/img237/1504/image1er.jpg)
Can't seem to get rid of the spunk stain effect on the rock; I can only assume that it is actually there and not a camera-produced artefact
-
It was just an observation... I think if I manage to sell the HV40 + 1000d and then have cash left after buying the 550d then I'll let Nat buy one of these :-[
-
Jim, get a couple dozen of them set up on a huge curved rig and shoot some concept bullet-time shit.
I wonder if enough of us have cameras and camcorders to do a monstrous bullet-time shoot of someone working a steep problem in a controlled environment (like a cave) :-\
-
Depends how static the subject is. For a mid-dyno shot, I suspect unless the models are identical they wouldn't sync well enough.
-
Plus all models would process the images differently and probably give you a different look/colour/tone from each camera, even with a factory reset - you'd have to stick with identical cameras to be sure.
There was a video a few years back by some scandanavian guy who did a freeze-frame bullet-time shit on a dyno problem, I think it was done with a shit load of disposable P&S cameras rigged to trigger together.
-
that guy has the endurance of a seal
-
After some deliberation, went for (I think) the waterproof version of this camcorder. Will have it by weekend, hopefully, will see how good it is.
-
Did it arrive Chris? Any good?
-
Will have it by weekend
;)
-
Doh
I'm not good with dates...
-
Pleased with results so far, will put some stuff in Vimeo soon.
Jim, have you got a protective pouch for yours. Pretty underwhelmed by the "sleeve" it came with, and best I can find locally is the Lowepro Apex AW 30, but it's a bit snug, and the next size up (the AW60) looks to be a bit too big.
-
What you need is the sleeve off an old minidisc walkman.
-
mine didn't come with any pouch, but for one hundred bones, I wasn't expecting one.
Like Johnny said, we had an old minidisc case lying around of the wifes that it fits in nicely
-
I only ever had a cheapo sanyo MD player, didn't come with no pouch. Will ask around tho'
-
I wouldn't go scouring the country looking for MD cases, it fits in nicely but its far from a good fit. Its just a little pouch thats about the right size, nothing special
-
Chris how's the sample footage from your water proof one coming on? Can you record with the viewing screen closed or does it have to be open to record?
-
I was in T J Hughes today and saw that they are flogging the Kodak Mini ZM1 (http://www.dabs.com/products/kodak-zm1-mini-video-camera---grey-73KD.html) for £15 (40% off the marked price of £24.99).
Only VGA video, but waterproof and feels pretty solid
I picked one up for the 2 year old to use in an attempt to distract her from her need to play with my gadgets. I've already had it in the fish tank and am looking forward to dunking it in my pint when I next go to The Sheaf. I seem to have a need to use the kids' gadgets.
I'm impressed at it's low light performance and reasonably wide lens
-
Kodak mini has provided us with plenty of fun. It seems fairly robust as well!
Rocket in a tree (http://vimeo.com/24686586)
-
I was just about to ask whether that was shot using the QVGA 60fps mode, but I see that information is listed on Vimeo.
It's a cracking little camera.
I think I'll tape up the bottom hatch for any sustained underwater filming.
-
hi, really really clueless about cameras but am keen to learn. just after a few recommendation of sort of do it all cameras?
not too expensive but not your cheap Argos tat either. cheers all
-
the gopro2 has just been released, mines on order, nice and cheap(ish) twice as sharp as the old the old one
-
I'm half hoping my old one dies, but it hasn't so far.
