obviously need a web cam / microphone & speakers.
All computers using windows xp or 7 OS if it matters

Seconded. Theres probably better/more efficient/less bloaty bits of software than Skype, but its free and works well.

Skype. It's also good for very cheap calls abroad if you open a pay as you go account. There's also Skype voice Apps for various phones that work really well if your phone has wifi so I use my Skype over iPhone to call my sister in Aus.

Another vote for skype here, particularly for the features FD points out too (although I'm not aware of being able to do video calls over the phone). I call my brother in Eire over Skype from the phone for fuck all.

Use it for keeping in touch with freinds and family around world.
