Title: Wireless Remotes
Post by: SA Chris on November 04, 2009, 11:19:59 am
Looking for a remote for new camera, is wirelss IR the way to go for maximum versatility?

Any recommendations, or ones to avoid? It's Pentax K7, but be hand if I could use it on old *ist D too.

Tanks :)

Do pentax not make one specifically for your camera?

It would appear not, unless their website is out of date.

http://www.pentax.co.uk/en/group/37/Photo_Accessories.html (http://www.pentax.co.uk/en/group/37/Photo_Accessories.html)

Plus they are always a lot more than the generic ones like this

if the camera has got an IR receiver I can't believe they don't make an IT remote for it, makes no sense. probably the same one as the previous models works.

Probably does, butt as it's a pretty new model, probably haven't updated websites yet.

Hahnel do a nice looking one, have emailed them to make sure it is suitable for new camera, probably is as it is suitable for all older Pentax DSLRs and doubt they would just change technology.

I bought one of these bad boys off Ebay for £20 ish. It's wireless (not IR) to 100 metres.

http://www.phottix.com/wireless-remotes/phottixr-cleon-ii.html (http://www.phottix.com/wireless-remotes/phottixr-cleon-ii.html)

It doesn't list the K7 as compatible but it does mention the *ist DS... maybe they haven't updated the site for the K7?

It's a fantastic bit of kit for the price, the proper Nikon IR one (I use Nikon) is about £150.. It works really well - I can sit in my lounge downstairs and take pictures from the camera upstairs which is pointed at the sky! Great for lighting shots :)

Not sure how many walls it will go through...

Bluetooth presumably?  Range isn't massive on that really.

IR is already wireless. :-\

IR needs line of sight tho. Chris doesn't want to see images of himself pointing the remote at the camera whilst mid vinegar-stroke :)

There's a couple on ebay that are cheap enough to be worth a try. here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wireless-Remote-Control-YN-126-for-Pentax-K7-K20D-K200D_W0QQitemZ390108200642QQcmdZViewItemQQptZCamera_Camcorder_Remotes?hash=item5ad442bec2) & here (http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Wireless-shutter-remote-for-Pentax-K100D-K7-K200D-K20D_W0QQitemZ280400172533QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item41492715f5)

No - it uses radio, and as I said above - the range is 100 metres, a lot more than bluetooth...

Yeah - but I meant wireless as in wifi, not IR wireless. As I said - it works through walls not just line of sight like IR.

They look really good - one of them says 200m!!

You can't go wrong for those prices!!

 missed that, whats the battery life like?

I've been using it for a year or so, it's probably been on for about 12 hours in total so far, about 500 shots or so... no idea if it has a battery in the remote (no panel to slide off) but the receiver uses one of those little 3v CR2 batteries.

I just set it to auto shoot to get the money shots!

Cheers for the advice guys, not considered the radio ones before, I think line of sight will be fine for my purposes though.

Just dragging this old topic up again.

I just received a wireless remote that I bought from a HK based ebay seller.

It was £11 and seems quite nicely made and works well. Took 2 weeks to get here but at that price I don't care. Bargain.

C'mon then, does it work? Lets see some pictures of your own backside from a  huge distance.

I went for a Hahnel one in the end btw. Yet to use it to take photos of my own ass from a long way away, but tested it out a couple of times and works well.

Whats your budget?
What are you using it for?
Does it need to be triggered in remote locations? (e.g. at a sporting event bolted to somewhere out of your reach amongst other remote cameras? or for surveillance purposes etc etc)
If Yes to the last one, then you need to steer clear of Infra Red and go for radio triggers as this will be the only method reliable enough to work from a distance, without line of sight, and amongst other remote units firing.
Plus if you go for something like a pair of pocketwizards you can use them to trigger off camera flash as well as cameras remotely :)

If its just to go on your tripod to take landscapes/pics of yourself etc etc, then any old IR remote will do the job, just get something universal.

read my posting above yours.

The Hahnel one I got looks identical to that one of yours in that link Bubba. Wonder if it's a knock off version. Or if the Hahnel one is a badged version of yours?

They do look suspiciously similar - given it's from Hong Kong and only cost £11 I suspect mine is the copy.

They'll probably be made in the same factory, same moulds etc. Some will get sold under a branded name with comeback, others not.

It looks very similar to mine too, but it looks like you can choose whether to use 'bulb' or standard on the remote on yours Bubba? Is that right? If so a much more logical idea..(on mine the bulb setting is on the camera receiver part)

Ah so you're shooting your ass?

Pocketwizards "Ass wizard" would have been the better choice, you should always go for something ass specific wherever possible in these situations for minimum compatibility issues.

I should have maybe read the last post on the page before hitting reply..... :-[
