are you trying to suggest that a linux install causes your cpu to run too hot?
Title: Re: Geeky Funny Pictures
Post by: slackline on October 29, 2009, 11:02:44 am
are you trying to suggest that a linux install causes your cpu to run too hot?

No, not at all.

Gentoo (http://www.gentoo.org), my preferred distro, is a source based distribution, so every single piece of software that I install is compiled on my computer from source.  This means that the CPU is used heavily, it doesn't ever over heat though.

This is in contrast to Ubuntu (i.e. Debian based) family where they are binary distributions.  The packages are compiled by someone at Ubuntu HQ and stuck on a server, when you update you download this pre-compiled binary and install it to your system.

Other source based distros include Slackware, Linux From Scartch, Arch Linux.

Other binary distributions include Fedora, CentOS, SuSE.

Horses for courses though.  I like the fine grain control of source based distros as it means I don't have bloated binaries with features I don't use.  For example I can't stand the KDE desktop, just too cartoony for me, so I set a USE="-kde" flag that means that no package will ever be built with KDE support.  Another example would be enabling USE="php" when installing Apache to ensure PHP support is enabled.  In contrast if you're using a binary distro, then much like M$ support has to be as generic as possible and will therefore include almost everything.

Slackers, chill, I'm pretty sure it was a joke referring to the picture - "Think your CPU is hot, try a Gentoo install".

Aye, I'd clocked why Jim was asking, I was just explaining the joke ("Think your CPU is hot, try a Gentoo install") in the picture itself.

With the above explanation in mind here's some more geeky Gentoo wallpapers...

T-shirts ok, but I really want one of these, its a t-shirt with linux cheat codes (commonly used commands) printed upside down so you can just look down when you've forgotten a command...

I do have a tattoo on my left forearm, but would never have cartoon like character, not even Tux.

Pah, you should know all of that stuff already  ;) It looks like it's just reg exp's and basic commands like du etc.... not really 'cheat codes'.

I have been writing shell scripts for years, no need for a t-shirt :)

Its Compiz (http://www.compiz.org/) that is the window manager that does the fancy graphics (the desktop cube, you can have multiple desktops under Linux  :o, and moving wobbly windows), been around and in development for a few years, certainly before some of the eyecandy of Win7.  Loads more eye candy than what they show there too.

Its quite tongue in cheek though and clearly taking the piss out of themselves, whereas the M$ shop was corporate marketing (*spit*) trying to be oh so cool and hip (even having M$ stores is simply copying Apple, again!).

The Blackeyed Peas compel the employees at the Microsoft Store in Mission Viejo, California to break out in dance, let their hair down and have some fun. This is an amazing store, the employees seem really excited and engaged, almost happy to be at work. My favorite parts are when people walking in the mall come inside the store, join in the dancing and have some fun. The amazing thing is that people are in the store for hours, they love interacting with the software and learning about new technology.

No need to investigate. Everybody knows darner colours absorb heat faster, so the blackberry/ blueberry/ whatever the hell flavour it's meant to be would be the best.

Ah yes - thats what I thought, but most of the temperature loss would be through conduction rather than radiative loss - so a pale one might be better as it would loose less temp to the outside... its a slow day today...

Don't know if you've ever been into a Complete Entertainment Exchange (http://www.cex.co.uk/) but the one in Sheffield they've done away with cases and just have motherboards mounted on the wall, presumably for testing components.

The simplest solution is to actually use a URL shortener to mask the true URL of the pictures location when embedding in UKB...

Not a photo but seemed the right place.

Last night sat in a plane on the tarmac for well over an hour while the engineers struggle to diagnose some fault. Eventually the Captain announces 'We're going to try one last thing, we're going to switch the plane of and then back on again, see if that works.' Which they did, everything went off simultaneously (like there was just one big button). Then they waited five minutes and rebooted everything. Which fixed the problem. Like it does.

Slackers will be delighted to hear that all the reboot code/text/whatever ran through on the screens in the seat backs and it was running Linux not Microsoft.

No pictures, in this geeky vaguely funny thing...

What if people bought cars like they buy computers?   General Motors doesn't have a "help line" for people who don't know how to drive, because people don't buy cars like they buy computers - but imagine if they did...

 Helpline:
"General Motors Helpline, how can I help you?"
 Customer:
"I got in my car and closed the door, and nothing happened!"
 Helpline:
"Did you put the key in the ignition and turn it?"
 Customer:
    "What's an ignition?"
 Helpline:
"It's a starter motor that draws current from your battery and turns over the engine."
 Customer:
"Ignition? Motor? Battery? Engine? How come I have to know all of these technical terms just to use my car?"

 Helpline:
"General Motors Helpline, how can I help you?"
 Customer:
"My car ran fine for a week, and now it won't go anywhere!"
 Helpline:
    "Is the gas tank empty?"
 Customer:
    "Huh? How do I know?"
 Helpline:
"There's a little gauge on the front panel, with a needle, and markings from 'E' to 'F'. Where is the needle pointing?"
 Customer:
    "I see an 'E' but no 'F'."
 Helpline:
"You see the 'E' and just to the right is the 'F'."
 Customer:
"No, just to the right of the first 'E' is a 'V'."
 Helpline:
    "A 'V'?!?"
 Customer:
    "Yeah, there's a 'C', an 'H', the first 'E', then a 'V', followed by 'R', 'O', 'L' ..."
 Helpline:
"No, no, no sir! That's the front of the car. When you sit behind the steering wheel, that's the panel I'm talking about."
 Customer:
"That steering wheel thingy -- Is that the round thing that honks the horn?"
 Helpline:
    "Yes, among other things."
 Customer:
"The needle's pointing to 'E'. What does that mean?"
 Helpline:
"It means that you have to visit a gasoline vendor and purchase some more gasoline. You can install it yourself, or pay the vendor to install it for you."
 Customer:
"What? I paid $12,000 for this car! Now you tell me that I have to keep buying more components? I want a car that comes with everything built in!"

 Helpline:
"General Motors Helpline, how can I help you?"
 Customer:
    "Your cars suck!"
 Helpline:
    "What's wrong?"
 Customer:
"It crashed, that's what went wrong!"
 Helpline:
    "What were you doing?"
 Customer:
"I wanted to go faster, so I pushed the accelerator pedal all the way to the floor. It worked for a while, and then it crashed -- and now it won't even start up!"
 Helpline:
"I'm sorry, sir, but it's your responsibility if you misuse the product."
 Customer:
"Misuse it? I was just following this damned manual of yours. It said to make the car go to put the transmission in 'D' and press the accelerator pedal. That's exactly what I did -- now the damn thing's crashed."
 Helpline:
"Did you read the entire operator's manual before operating the car sir?"
 Customer:
"What? Of course I did! I told you I did EVERYTHING the manual said and it didn't work!"
 Helpline:
"Didn't you attempt to slow down so you wouldn't crash?"
 Customer:
    "How do you do THAT?"
 Helpline:
"You said you read the entire manual, sir. It's on page 14. The pedal next to the accelerator."
 Customer:
"Well, I don't have all day to sit around and read this manual you know."
 Helpline:
"Of course not. What do you expect us to do about it?"
 Customer:
"I want you to send me one of the latest versions that goes fast and won't crash anymore!"

 Helpline:
"General Motors Helpline, how can I help you?"
 Customer:
"Hi! I just bought my first car, and I chose your car because it has automatic transmission, cruise control, power steering, power brakes, and power door locks."
 Helpline:
"Thanks for buying our car. How can I help you?"
 Customer:
    "How do I work it?"
 Helpline:
"Do you know how to drive?"
 Customer:
"Do I know how to what?"
 Helpline:
"Do you know how to DRIVE?"
 Customer:
"I'm not a technical person! I just want to go places in my car!"

Perfect sense, more likely normal for people who skim read a lot than proof of a 'strong mind'.

Yep, it's doing the FB rounds and seems simple to read. We tried it on our 8 and 7 year olds and they had no problem either.

Entertaining, but does anyone have any trouble reading these? They always seem do the ego massaging 'only some super cool people can read this', but nobody seems to come out and say they can't decipher them.

(I can't see magic eye pictures :( )

I always assumed that they were easier for dyslexics such as myself to read. Its shape and pattern recognition rather than true reading,  but then I guess that is pretty much all that skim reading is anyway.....

I find it amazing that almost everyone in the English speaking world knows that the meaning of Life the Universe and Everything is 42.

It seems to have transcended Adams writings into popular culture, where many who know the answer wouldn't have a clue who wrote it.

Or even that the Earth was created for a bunch of Mice.

Which incidentally renders all of Slopers opinions void, though perhaps one of the Mods might consider changing his forum name to Marvin...

There is a band called 1023MB, but you won't have heard of them because they haven't made it to a gig yet.

Some of the members used to be in a band called "touch file". They weren't great, just 0K.
