Another numpty hardware question: is it worth the extra 28 quid or so to get a gigabit ethernet enabled NAS box vs. the normal one? My computer only has the usual network adapter in it at the mo but I'm guessing that's easily fixed by a relatively cheap upgrade. Then my router would also need upgrading too?

Correct, everything has to be reading from the same songsheet.
The only real reason I can envisage is if you want to play movies off the NAS, particularly so if they're HD movies as there is so much more data to transfer for a seconds worth of playback.
