Title: Skins
Post by: TobyD on September 02, 2009, 09:43:15 pm
Anyone on here used these climbing? Any anecdotal evidence of them making any significant difference to performance or recovery?

Tight, like prom night.....
Drew loves his. Has the long sleeve top, Says its perfect for maintaining temp, be it hot or cold. I think he has on occasion also slept in it (on purpose) and maybe it aids recovery by holding your pipes tight while they repair*

*I may have dreamt this bit

He did mention that he would prefer a vest version to climb in as the arms are a little restricting.

Serpico swears by this type of tech, and he's not incompetent (then again he wasn't shabby before he discovered it). Technical advances favour the already good (as bloody usual).

No I think there would be quite a dash to get away from the Tor if you turned up like that.

If I can be tediously on-topic...

I'd also be interested in what the perceived benefits of these are (Serpico?).  A brief search suggests no effects on sprinting or power (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18078789?ordinalpos=41&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum), sprinting or throwing (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/17341589?ordinalpos=53&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum), netball (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18078789?ordinalpos=41&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum), time-trialing (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19223669?ordinalpos=10&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum), or sprinting/plyometrics (http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/19131276?ordinalpos=12&itool=EntrezSystem2.PEntrez.Pubmed.Pubmed_ResultsPanel.Pubmed_DefaultReportPanel.Pubmed_RVDocSum) although some of these studies reported reduced post-exercise soreness.

Are the researchers asking the wrong questions, asking the right questions but answering them badly, or is it all BS?

The SCIENCE:

http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/the-benefits-of-compression-clothing-35846 (http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/the-benefits-of-compression-clothing-35846)

I've experimented with bits of tubegauze whilst foot on campusing and didn't feel any real benefit, but wearing tubegauze on sore elbows has always been a favourite whilst climbing (seems to offer a bit of support, or maybe just keeps them warmer) and now I often wear them after climbing as it seems to help recovery.
I have a couple of compression tops which I use as base layer in winter which may help recovery but mainly I find it's a socially acceptable way of wearing a gimp suite in public.

Well spotted, I didn't obviously.

Serpico, thanks for the reply.

I'm familiar with the effects of compression garments on physiology.  When performance benefits are measured, results are much less clear-cut though, as is often the case.  I'm interested in what people who use these garments feel they do for them (as opposed to what they have been told they should do for them) as this is often a good way of generating new research questions.

I've used the original tights for the past couple of months and as an uncontrolled experiment with a sample size of one I certainly don't have any data on performance.

But they do feel great. After a long ride or run it's like having my legs hugged which makes me feel good. I'm thinking of going for the full gimp suit next...

Steve, that's just the kind of feedback I'm interested in.  I'm not going to ask where you found the gimpicon!

Has the long sleeve top,
He did mention that he would prefer a vest version to climb in as the arms are a little restricting.

is the pressure on the arms not the whole point of the top though?

If I get on a long route maybe with rests and stuff and I'm wearing my red-tips t-shirt I can get cold, so I put on my thermal top and get too hot.....what to do?
Bring on the Skins.
Main reason for me is temp regulation.
You start the route at a certain temp and when you get to the top you've not overheated or chilled.

I pulled my back right royally on Thurday and the Skins shirt when straight on in, it didn't come off for two days (proper stinks now), it felt good to hold the back fat tight.
I have one with sleeves which is good for temp regulation and probably recovery, but a little (very little) bit restrictive. I would like one without sleeves for warmer temps and to show off me pipes.
....enough SCIENCE?
