Title: Cheap n' Cheerful Road Bike
Post by: Will Hunt on July 31, 2009, 08:29:47 pm
I have decided that I require a road bike. There's no point me spending a load of money on something that is incredible and capable of winning every race going though so I'm thinking of keeping it fairly mid range. Probably the lower end of that. Its main uses will be carting me to and from work on days I don't lift share (about 12 miles up and down some reasonably large hills) and for pootling around the Yorkshire Dales which I have done a bit of in the past and am interested in pursuing.

Help a brother out y'all.

EDIT: Should probably have provided a price range. In all honesty I have no idea what a road bike of this sort of spec comes in at so I'll just see what gets suggested and say Higher (unlikely) or Lower.

What sort of spec?
mid range prob means 500 to 1k ish.

For value I'd trawl ebay - you can get some good stuff for south of 500 notes (http://sports.shop.ebay.co.uk/items/Bikes__road-bike?Type=Racing%2520Bike&=&_catref=1&_dmpt=UK_Bikes_GL&_fln=1&_sacat=33503&_ssov=1&_trksid=p3286.c0.m282&_mPrRngCbx=1&_udlo=0&_udhi=500).
On the other hand I just replaced the road bike with this (http://www.planet-x-warehouse.co.uk/acatalog/SL_Team_Aluminium_Road.html) plus wheels and finishing kit from them, and Sram Rival Gruppo - cost me about 1k so still mid range I suppose. <7.5kg too. Though you'd need to build it obviously and the labour if you want a shop to do it for you is not insignificant.

Will, this (http://www.halfords.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/product_storeId_10001_catalogId_10151_productId_502003_langId_-1_categoryId_165710) looks reasonable value, though I've no experience myself of boardman bikes, others on here have spoken well of them. 105 is good stuff at that price point.

Cheers for the info Duma.

As regards the price my idea of mid range was obviously way off. Lets scale it down a bit!

The stuff on ebay looks good.

Those last two links are very appealing. Thanks.

Impressive that these can be so in-expensive. Look to have acceptable spec especially for the work slog. I'd choose the red one but only because I prefer the campag. hoods.

This is meant to be good (http://www.bikeradar.com/gear/category/bikes/road/product/880-24-31955) - more like £399 as opposed to that review price mind.

It's the time of year when bikes get reduced in price as the 2010 stuff starts to appear so some good stuff should be available in your price bracket - I just bought a bike with £1500 knocked off the price. Get looking around the net to start with.

Shouldn't this thread be called "Cheep 'n' Cheerful Road Bike" in light of Will's new housemate (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,12278.0/all.html)?
