They're were about £80-90 most places.
I got mine from Microglobe (http://www.microglobe.co.uk/catalog/index.php?cName=nikon-lenses-nikon-prime-lenses) in 2007 for £79, but all lenses are now more expensive due to less favourable exchange rates :(
Best place for comparing a wide range of camera equipment prices is Camera Price Buster (http://camerapricebuster.co.uk/index.html), they don't list what type of 50mm lense though (viz all the AF[/D] stuff) and best is only £0.05 more than microglobe (which is FA).
You'd likely be able to a good condition second hand one from someone who's upgraded to the f/1.4 as quite a few people seem to do.

they're not overly common on the second hand market becuase they're so cheap anyway a lot of people don't bother to ever sell them on - most second hand dealers would only give you £40 for one. Try ebay? Great lens, sharper than a motherfucker. I think mine came from microglobe some years ago - its a pretty safe lens to buy grey market cos there's fuck-all to go wrong with it.

 Forgot about that facet of getting 'em second hand, still some bods might try cashing them in if they are stepping up to the f/1.4 (personally I see no point though as the f/1.8 is a great lens).

camerapricebuster only lists current new stock, there is only one AF model of a 50mm f/1.8 in production, thats the D version. If you see a used non-D cheap then get it cos the D-feature makes fuck-all difference.
Actually to clarify on models, there are the following:
AF 50mm f/1.8 - first model from the 80s, hard plastic ridged focussing ring, DOF scale behind a plastic window.
AF-N 50mm f/1.8 (sometimes just listed at AF without the N, confusingly) - rubber rocussing ring, better, painted on DOF scale. Same optics at before.
AF-D 50mm f/1.8 - identical to above but with the D feature.

Some secondhand options one in Derby (http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/SHdetails.asp?Item=10247) and one in Manchester (http://www.lcegroup.co.uk/SHdetails.asp?Item=9276) (not sure this is actually for sale though, looks more like saying their after them).

there's a second hand one on here, but asking over the odds for it. (http://www.camtechuk.com/shop/shop-list/product-list.php?manufac=nikon[/url)
