Title: Getting around web filter at work?
Post by: Turboman on May 01, 2009, 09:30:55 am
Just wondered if anyone knows any clever ways of getting around web filters at work?

I sussed the way of viewing UKB. http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,8206.0.html (http://ukbouldering.com/board/index.php/topic,8206.0.html)

Could really do with viewing magicseaweed.

I've resorted to viewing cached pages but not much use for surf forecasts.

Cheers

Suprised there is a way of feeding the content of blocked websites into another unblocked website without it getting picked up by the filter.

Kinda like hiding a comic inside your school text book.

Does that involve downloading firefox to work pc? If so it's not an option for me.
Cheers anyway.

is there a way of running firefox from a CD/USBdrive rather than from a hard disk? then you'd get around work restrictions on installing shit. I remember seeing some kind of sly web browser you could do this from years ago.

Yes, grab PortableApps (http://portableapps.com/) bung it on a USB device (anywhere but work by the sounds of it).  Install FoxyProxy, take said USB drive to work with you and away you go.

Sounds like you've answered my prayers.

When will UKB overtake Google as the premier search engine?

Cheers

and if your in the fear of getting caught browsing, you can hide your applications in your window bar at the bottom,
this program uses shortcuts like, alt A and poof its gone. alt A and its back.  again run from USB

I am guessing the above program has to be installed on the computer to work so it is probably not an option here. For the ability to minimize Firefox to the system tray then the Minimize to Tray (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10488) or Fire Tray (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/10702) add ons should work and get around the issue when used with slack--lines suggestion earlier. I will add that I haven't used either of these programs so have no idea if they are any good.
