Sorry if this is common knowledge but I hate realplayer and this uses Flash instead.

There's a realplayer plugin for windows media player available too. Simplifies things a bit. I'm sure google will reveal all.

This was announced a while back (http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/technology/7787335.stm). They're basically moving to Adobe's new AIR (http://www.adobe.com/products/air/) which is the new thing to replace Flash.
Best thing is though that since AIR is available for multiple platforms I (and others) will be able to use the iPlayer under GNU/Linux (although at the time of annoucement AIR hadn't stabilised under Linux)

or simply install real player alternative (http://www.codecguide.com/download_real.htm) and whilst your at it you might as well install quicktime alternative (http://www.codecguide.com/download_qt.htm)

I wonder if this is what they are going to release on Android too, rather than flash 10; that would be handy, then I could watch vimeo vids on my phone
